new owner of a 240D

Hi

I bough a 240D model 82 with manual transmission and 310000 miles on it, I bough it from a really nice guy in craigslist for $200, the car was smoking really bad, and the guy take it to the shop and they told him that a piston ring was broken.
The overall condition of the car is Ok, no rust the interior is thorn down, yesterday I start by cleaning the injectors, they were really dirty with some rust, and replacing the return hose for the injectors, and that was about it, now the car runs good and smokes a little bit.
Now I have many questions, I first wan to buy a car just for the winter, but i like how it drives and I considering the option to fix it and keep it, so I want to know if a piston ring is broken how bad does the car will smoke I take it on the road up to 75Mph, and was ok, does have some click noise at low rpm, and smokes as any diesel wen you shift gears.
Wen i take the oil cover blows some smoke to, but the main source of smoke was a broken return diesel hose.
If I decide to keep the car, what are the basic parts that I should check? due to the age off the car, I read something about replacing the flex disc, I imagine that I should also check all the fluids??, what other parts will be crucial or due to check for a good maintenance.

Thank you very much, I will post some pictures and try to take a video of the oil cap blow.

broken piston rings are annoying. such as small part but impossible to get to short of dismantling the entire engine.

with a broken ring, it will smoke a lot compared to a normal running 240D. and will use a lot more oil also. so i would keep plenty of oil in your trunk. to put it in simple terms, your engine is addicted to 15W-40. or whatever oil is in there.

Thanks for the reply, smokes like this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkFzy6DbhJc&feature=related , doesn't leak diesel, I will take some video tomorrow.

Do you think that the car can keep running with the broken ring?, how much oil will use?

Hey there, I'm pretty new to this great forum too. I just want to let ya know most of the forum members like it when it's obvious you've used the search function within the forum. Most everything you've asked has already been answered in past threads. This is an amazing and easy to use resource. A little research can go a long way. Good luck! And, I think you should keep the car and learn as much as you can about it. They're great cars to learn on.

Can you describe this? Why would it smoke when you shift gears? Is the transmission flaring when you shift?

It's a manual tranny . . . probably means like big trucks that have a bit extra fuel dumping in as they mash the pedal to the floor . . .

Great car by the way! A compression test could help you determine about whether or not the ring really is broken . . . the previous owner only assumed it was broken, but I'm sure they did not open it up and pull the piston . . .

You'll get MUCH better mileage after you replace the primer pump.
As suggested, perform a valve adjustment, if it's still smoking, hard to tell the color in the video, do a compression/leakdown test.
And yes, an under car inspection would be a good idea as would all fluids and filters renewed.

Beautiful! I love how the diesel was just squirting out of the primer pump on that example video. heh

I hope the video help to get a diagnostic if is possible that works like this with a broken piston ring.

Thanks

Was the engine good and warm in those videos, or is that right after cold starting it? Mine has 202k, smokes a bit when it's cold but clears up after it's warm, maybe a minute or two.

It looks like a 300+ mile diesel. The engine looks sturdy and not shaking around which is a good sign. You should drive it the way it is and just make sure you check the oil level periodically. As these cars age, they will smoke and they will have blow-by. Nothing to be worried about. A valve adjustment should definitely be done. It won't be a cure-all, but it will have it run much better.
