1980 300SD for motor-$300

Asking $300, I just want the motor. It's been sitting for about 5 years. There's a fair amount of smoke, even warm. The blowby test was good, hardly moved when placed on. Has about 190,000 miles. There was a rattle up from by the belts, they looked loose, so I'm guessing that was the noise. It had the oil changed about 4-5 months ago and it looks like there might be fuel in the oil. It smelled a little funny and it looked a little less viscous than I was used to. Injectors looked fine. It also started up really easily, even with a low battery. Compression is as follows.

1: 300 psi
2: 260 psi
3: 300 psi
4: 280 psi
5: 280 psi

At first, I thought number 1 was 400, but I did it again and it was 300. Maybe I misread it? I'm not sure. 300 makes more sense. They seem low to me.

What concerns me most is the potential fuel in oil problem, but I read that is most likely just the lift pump, and the compression. It probably needs the valves adjusted. For $300, should I bother going back (45 min. drive) to check chain stretch, adjust valves and check compression again, or just try to get it down to 200 maybe?

Based on my engine experiences, I would offer $150 for it. I found a perfect running 300D motor in a car with lots of good parts for $300. IMHO I wouldn't pay a penny over $200.00 for it.

Those are at or below spec numbers. Could just be a valve adjust and new valve stem seals. If it sat for a long time it could be stuck rings. If those were warm numbers I wouldnt pay much at all for it.

Those are warm numbers. What exactly are stuck rings? It starts and runs fine. With these symptoms, would it even be worth it to get it and try to sort out the problems?

Wouldn't stuck rings mean excessive blowby?

What color is the interior? I may be interested in some parts, might help out your $300 investment a little.

It's like a brown/black interior. It's pretty damp in there, though, so I don't know how much is good.

The guy says he can get 200 for scrap, and he said he didn't want to sell it for less than that (a given) when I offered him 100. I guess that implies he'll sell it to me for that?

heck 200 for a running SD isn't bad, especially with no blowby, and starts easily. im sure you can make back the 200 and maybe more in sell the rest for parts and then even if the engine does crap on you your not out anything.

W126. Trying to pick it up today. Definitely making the money back, maybe even with just the transmission. Shifts fine. Are there any tricks to trailering a car?

Place on trailer, tie down, tie down again just in case, tow home.

You pretty much stole that car.

Well, I hope so. It's still a gamble.

Just took a look on craigslist for kicks

Although, I don't feel that bad, that's 300 I still have. If I had the cash, I think I'd buy it though.

keep all four wheels off the ground or you need to disconnect the transmission from the drive shaft. A benz transmission doesn't like to be towed more than 20mph.
