Oil cooler and lines

I ordered the oil lines today from fastlane and started reading about the project. Lots of talk about striping the cooler threads and there is a nipple you can tap in to the cooler to get past the striped threads.

Then I came across this thread
old oil cooler lines needed

this guy used hose to a compression fitting and made his own hose. I was thinking of doing this myself before I shelled out the $200 for MBZ hoses.

I can tap the cooler and filter (maybe) and put in my own hydro hose in there and not have to worry about the mbz hoses failing again. I really like this hose http://www.discounthydraulichose.com/SAE_100R14A_Teflon_reg_PTFE_Hydraulic_Hose_p/r14-hose.htm

I use it as fuel line on my truck on the veggie side.

Why can I not just use my own hoses and fittings?

Because if they go so does your engine! Ask around I am super cheap but thats one thing I dont skimp on. Ever. The only problem with the stripping is people who lack patience or over tighten. It is after all aluminumumumum. Just take your time. If there is a design fail its that the compression fitting jacket doesnt go up high enough, its right at the point where the nut part start feeding on and its easy to get caught on the jacket. Just make sure you pull the fitting back as you screw it on and use a torque wrench or only do it as much as is necessary. Make sure you use two wrenches.

Anything you do beyond parts replacement is experimental. It is up to you if you feel the risk is worth the cost savings.

The stripped Nipple Rapair calls for cutting off the old threaded portion of the Nipple and tapping the Oil Cooler for the Repair adapters. So this means that the Oil Cooler Housing can be Tapped.
But, you will need to decide what size and types of threads you want to use for your other project.
If you used tapered Pipe Threads I would be real carful how much I tighten the Fittings in the Oil Cooler Housing.

I am not really after savings, just a better hose that can be replaced easily and take more abuse then the factory one. that hydro hose can take major abuse and JIC fittings are so much better then the weak aluminum fitting on the cooler. Guess Ill wait and see what happens when my hoses come from Phil.

Good point on the NPT and too snug. I have cracked plastic things from over doing it.
