602-vacuum pump failure & poor engine performance
 

Finally got my 1993 300D 2.5T back on the road last month and running like a top after a timing chain failure earlier this year. (The timing chain failure trashed the original engine and i replaced it with a lower mileage engine). Then lightening hit again....vacuum pump failed at 80mph on I-95. Luckily, no apparent engine damage. Just replaced the vacuum pump and the car runs, but:

• engine sounds bad. mechanic thinks the injection timing may be off and causing it to run rich and loud.
• very low power. It almost seems as though the turbo isn't providing any boost.
• stalls after high speed runs. takes a few minutes of sitting and then it will start right up.
• just ran it for 3 hours at 80mph on the interstate....very low power but runs fine at high speed/high rpm

What could the problem be? it ran perfect before the vacuum pump failed, and with a new vacuum pump on it sounds and runs poorly. Could the timing chain have jumped a tooth when the vacuum pump failed causing mistiming? Could the injection pump timing be off? what else?

I can't offer anything other than perhaps because the vacuum pump runs on the cam which is part of the IP timing device maybe there is a issue with the timing device failing to operate correctly? All the pieces and parts of the failed pump accounted for?

These sound like fuel starvation. Filters or tank screen.

UPDATE: The car will not start this morning (after a couple hour drive last night, as mentioned in my original post). I looked at the engine and there is what appears to be oil (maybe diesel) all around the #3 injector. It doesn't appear to be coming from the rubber fuel liner connector, but rather from lower near where the injector protrudes from the head. ????????? Please help.

We're you able to collect all the ball bearing from the dead Vac pump?

Last Time Fuel Filters Pri/Sec Changed Out?
Have you attemped to pull codes from the EDS system?
Oil in Water? Water in Oil?
Compression?
Battery Condition?

Start with simple basic stuff first. Could be fuel delivery problem or something more ominious.

UPDATE:

After looking at it in better light, it is apparent that the leak from around the injector is oil (not diesel) and lots of it. The valve cover gasket above is clean as a whistle, so the oil is coming out of the injector. what does that mean???

Oil can't come out of the injector.

i didn't think so either, so i am stumped. Could the timing had been knocked off (jump a tooth) and the car still run like it did?
