first time poster need help with transmission

I am looking at a 84 300sd to buy the problem is with the transmission it goes into reverse fine no lag . shift 1st ,2nd,3rd great but no fouth gear at all like it goes into neutral even shifting Manuely it does the same thing. From the fourth gear can shift down to third or slow the car down it will shift to third . the current owner allowed me to take the car home to fiddle with changed the fluid/filter no help, unhooked the vaccum line to the trans no help, the modulator did not hold vaccum, but my 300cd doesnt either and it shifts fine. can this transmission be repaired econmicaly or is the fourth gear band toasted . she want 400.00 for the or 500 with chrome 15 wheels like the one on the car but chromed . all commits welcomed exempt for my grammar and spelling thanks again for your time and experience

I don't know as if I would give her 400 now, I think I would offer like 300 and see. Nobody else is going to want that thing with a bad trans. Someone will likely buy it for the engine or scrap.

For $400 I'd buy it and put a new used tranny in there (assuming the engine is good and other systems are fine). Or if you are feeling up to it get/do a rebuild on the current one. The interior is a bit rough but if the miles are under 300k and everything else on the car is fine you are getting a good deal. But I'd still offer $300, never offer full price. You can always pay full price but most sellers start high and are willing to come down on their price.

If the engine is in decent shape, buying the whole car for $3-400 you are already ahead as the engine is worth about that.

the car show 208k with a broken odometer so who knows how many miles the car has on it i have been bargaining with this lady for 6months she started out at 800.00 at one time this past summer i did offer 400.00 she said no then she called back she allow me to bring it home to monkey with changed fluid/filter ,blower did blow due to a broken electical connection on the fan motor, did not have time to check air.So there are so many unanswered quetions and car just did'nt turn me on that much but the biggist this is the transmission if it can be fix. Post No 4th Gear

When this happened on SWMBO's '82 240D , I asked my buddy who's an Indie MB Mechanic and he put it on the hoist and adjusted the 4th gear band , that was several years ago and it still works *perfectly* and we routinely travel out of state fully loaded with people & luggage .

I say BUY IT ! .

Lots of folks prefer the W-126 (ick) chassis so you'll be able to flip it if your son doesn't like it .

Not "adjustable" as you're thinking. The B2, at least, has three lengths of "dog bones" between the piston and band. Short (stock), medium (worn) and long (super worn).

Sure seems like a good buy even with the tranny problems. I'm looking for a rust free SD & would consider going that far for it. Us folks in the midwest get the rust bucket cars. I'm tired of spending more time on sheetmetal than the mechanicals.

Buy it if it doesn't need paint. It's worth that much in scrap. Put a trans in if necessary. I've been looking for a parts car & haven't found anything in decent shape for near that amount. You didn't say how old your son is but slow, built like a tank are good criteria when choosing a vehicle for young offspring learning to drive.

That dash don't look cracked and that rear seat looks passable. Body looks pretty clean too.

$400? I'd say it's well worth it.
