Don't they teach this stuff in math class anymore? I blame it on today's teaching of how to take standardized tests instead of math skills.

Guys, someplace in the back of my mind I seem to remember that second gear was used when you were trying to get out of mud or perhaps snow - that it gives you power to both back wheels. Is this not correct?

I slip from D into 3 going down longish steepish grades as a way of keeping off the brakes, when everybody else in front of me is braking... and we're doing maybe 60 km/h. It's amazing how well 3 holds the car back (engine braking) going down grades. And this is an acceptable use of 3 according to the car's manual.
