OK serious transmission question

I am in the middle of the biggest old Benz stimulus package sessions since I bought this car (84 300D). I'm planning on some bodywork and paint, then new wheels and tires next year. However, I do have a concern about the transmission. I ran it for a bit with low fluid, which was a great idea. I have since remedied that, but some time a few months ago, it started making a strange sound. While driving at freeway speed, iot makes a static-like, or quick "cracklee-popy" sound. It isn't loud, but it is coming from the transmission right under the gear select. Also, it doesn't like to stay in the lower gears, almost like the shift lever doesn't move as freely as it should. I really noticed that when I topped off the fluid and rowed the gears as I never use those gears.

Anyway, anyone have any similar experiences?

Go underneath the vehicle and check out the nylon bushing that secures the shifter to the shift rod. It might be just about non-existent.
