Question fluid change ?

Good afternoon. I will be changing my fluids tomorrow. Is it better to change the tranny fluid hot or cold? Thanks in advance everyone. I hope this helps out some with my tranny slip. Another question, someone sugested to add TRans X for 100 miles to soften the seals and I did that and someone else suggested to add Lubegard. I found a source, and I would like to ask if it is recommended to leave it in the tranny or replace the fluid again after 100 miles.

drain all fluids hot

drain all fluids hot (except maybe for the coolant), as you increase the chance of having particulates suspended, and fluids drain more completely when hot. I cant speak to the benefits or drawbacks of the additives you mentioned.

I don't know what Lubeguard is, but snake oil is snake oil is snake oil. Do not leave the TransX in there for too long despite what the directions say. You do not want the solvents to soften the seals too much.

The main reason that I had suggested using it (with a very short exposure time) was only for a transmission that was on its last lap -- marginal at best. The solvents help to remove some of the sludge and varnish that can permeate the porous friction materials, hopefully resulting in an improved coefficient of friction. The fact that it will help swell up old seals will often times increase the clamping pressure exerted by the

Personally I would not leave anything in a transmission other than good clean fresh fluid. You did not mention it, but I'll have to assume that you're planning on changing the filter as well. A plugged filter can impede fluid flow which will definitely affect functioning.
And don't forget to drain the torque converter, as there is a *lot* of fluid in there.

Thumbs up thanks

to Mark and RTH. I will change it hot tomorrow. I already got the filter and gasket ready. What fluid should I get? I read the tranny takes Dexron, and some say Mercon while others say the MB stuff. Any suggestions?

This might be too little too late, but all you'll find on the shelves is Dexron III/Mercon. Some folks use synthetic ATF. Probably best to figure out what's wrong with the transmission before introducing more variables.

Thanks Sixto. I replaced the tranny fluid with Dexron III/Mercon.
Still slips. I asked my Dad to bring it to Patrick Tan this morning. I hope there are adjustments that he can make. if not I'll just try Lubegard and live with it. Hopefully, it is not time to shop for a tranny real soon.

Draining an engine hot is a great thing to do. Draining your automatic transmission hot is a somewhat dangerous thing to do. There is no combustion in the transmission as there is in the engine(you hope), so you don't have the contamination problem like you do in an engine which is why draining it hot is advantageous.

Automatic Transmission fluid gets HOT, much hotter than engine oil. Be careful.

Good luck,

Thanks for the advise Larry. When I replaced the fluid last weekend, the engine temp was a little bit above 80 but the tranny fluid wasn't too hot. Is there something else I need to check?
Sixto, my Dad said that Patrick Tan is a very pleasant guy to talk to. He said nothing could be done to the tranny. Just drive it easy and enjoy the scenery. Thanks to your recommendation.
Unkl, around how much was the tranny that youput in you car?
I need to save my pennies now.
Thanks everyone. I've felt what this engine could do with a little adjustment from the ALDA, that was a lot of fun.
