Air filter question

PO of my 240 said the car had a relatively new air filter and I didn't check it. Looking at it, I can't determine a brand name but it's stamped "oil before use" or something similar. It's clearly been oiled, and as a result I can't really tell if it's dirty or not. Is oiling them first normal in these cars or is it just this particular filter? Any brand recommendations?

Mine was not oiled . . . I used a Mann C 30 122 . . . bought it from Phil here on the board . . . old was made in Germany, new in Spain . . .

I believe the old 240D's in the 115's had an oil bath type filter . . .

I imagine if it says "oil before use" it is K&N or some other "high performance", reusable type air filter.

the W115/OM 615 and early 616 before 1980 used oil bath air filters, according to the owner's manuals in cars of those dates that I have seen.

I own an 83 240D, have replaced the air filter and it is definitely NOT an oil bath air filter

So order a new one, keep the area in the air filter housing clean and happy motoring!

To what he said, I'll add: Get a normal paper element filter, and place the K&N directly in the trash where it belongs.

Don't throw away the old one you can sell it on ebay. New they are about $45.

Here is a big long thread on the pro and con of the K&N air filters. I am the one who started the thread asking if there was anything besides the K&N cleaner that could be used to wash out the oil before it was re-oiled so it could be used again.

Boy, that thread got kinda ugly. I don't know if this filter is a K/N or not. I'll take a pic of it when the kid gets home from school.

K&N isn't worthy of the garbage. Burying it in the backyard would be too dignified as well.

If it fits into your Air Filter Housing just like tha Stock Air Filter it almost has to be a K&N; as near as I can tell they are the only ones that make one that goes In the Air Filter Housing.

If it is one of those kind of Cone Shaped Air Filters that has an Intake Tube that attaches directly to the Turbo; there is a bunch of companies that make them.

Charlie
By posting the Old Thread I though it might reduce that chance of another long one.
