injector testing

1985 300sd, 126 body
Is there any way of testing injectors in car? Intermittently rough idle at stop after cruising at highway speeds. Can't isolate when. Rack damper is ok, and used purge just last week..also noticing smoke on acceleration. Other than that 28+ mpg and running strong.

You could do a diesel purge first - that might help. If it's shaking in idle you should check your engine mounts - if they are squashed you should replace them. One way to test is to gently lift the oil pan with a car jack supported by a 2x4 - if the shaking goes away then it's your motor mounts.

I believe you'd have to remove the injectors from the car and have them pop-tested and balanced to make sure they are all in spec.

Part of what they do when they test an Injector on the Nozzle/Pop Tester is to observe the Spray Pattern; that cannot be done with the Injector on the Engine.
The other part of the test is they observe the pressure that your Injector Spray Nozzles opens/pops at. Ounce they know that pressure the slowly work the pressure up to 200psi below the opening pressure. They look to see if the Spray Nozzle Drips.
If it drips too much the seating area inside is worn out. They need to see that also.
