Rear end importance

Another consideration is a lot of the laser alignment machine use the rear tires/axle as the reference point. If the rear end is not plumb/straight, the front end won't track right.

I remember being behind a pickup where the rear axle was visually not straight, and the truck drove down the street trying to crab.

The use of a four wheel alignment machine sets the front wheels exactly parallel to the two rear wheels. Therefore the vehicle tracks straight, by definition.

Of course, it's possible to have the axis of the body not quite parallel to the direction of travel, but this will have no affect on the capability of the vehicle to track properly.
