I need advice on a 87 300td purchase

Please check this out and tell me what you think. It has a salvaged title then the passenger fender was replaced from a wreck. Car seems to drive straight. It has a little rust on the rear wheel well.

Thanks for the help

I just myself bought a 87 300TD and paid more then I wanted to for it, To me 1000.00 would have been a steal... I love the car and I've had it just about a week now... as for salvaged titles, as long as the rebuild was done correctly then there's no problem, all it means is an insurance co. made a payout on it as a "totaled" vehicle as they didn't want to have it repaired likely due to it's age depending on when it happened. I'd say that if it runs and drive's smoothly, there's minimal rust (within your scope of repairing) then I'd say it's a good car, the ad itself does not give a lot of information which is a little disconcerting, make sure you know how badly the car was damaged, also look at the frame etc... 1900 is not too bad of a deal to me...

That car's been for sale since last spring with the price lowered several times. I've driven it and thought of buying it myself, I'll PM you about it.

Thanks for the PM!!

Is the turbo on this vehicle interchangeable with any other motors? I think that it might need a new turbo as smoke is actually coming out of the turbo. There is also a chance that oil is leaking from the turbo and burning on the exhaust. Didnt look very closely.

Realistically I'd offer somewhere between $1,000 and $1,500.

You will be hard pressed to find another 124 300TD in driveable condition with an asking price of $1900 or under. If the body/interior is even in decent shape it would be a go for me at that price. Unless it is really rust or it will need a TON of work, I think that is a decent price.

Based on alfa's comments I would offer much lower. If he has dropped the price many times he most likely is willing to deal.

Yeah, he's quite motivated to get rid of it, has a lot of cars if I recall right.

My problem (and for the record this is just my judgement, go check it out for yourself to make your own, don't take my word for it) is that it had a slight knock in the valvetrain that didn't go away and it needed a lot of little things, I would have bought it otherwise when it was $2,500.

Offer $1,500, got nothing to lose and the car's been for sale for so long that he may just go for it.

Oh and, nckmsn, Tear-A-Part on Redwood and +/- 600 South has a 1987 300D if you buy it and need parts.

You generally get what you pay for. If this car needs major known parts, then you're in the game of fixing it up. If it's drivable as is and you get a year out of it, drive it as a beater. If you want to get serious keep your eye open for a 87 that is in real good condition, then use this one as parts. The head alone could be worth the paid price, if you ever need to transplant that onto your future "baby".. Especially if it's not a 14 head, but I betcha it is.

For $1900 I'd be looking at this as a parts source to keep my real ride going. If you have the space, fill it.

I came across a rusting 87 300D with some major issues on it, bad power (no turbo, hissing vac leak, ALDA probably shot, etc.), rear bearing grinds on a turn, every other interior part broken or not functioning. The guy even had fresh green coolant in it, and was proud of recent cooling system work (new pump - I said "your coolant is why" but he didn't understand my Benz humor). Obviously did little upkeep on anything that wasn't essential for keeping it rolling. He was asking $2500. He wanted to get something more reliable for his wife pregnant with first expecting. I offered $1800 (it had a #22 head on it and my IR temp pointer read 80* across the whole head), and told him I'd toss in a baby carriage and play pen for free. He laughed me away.

SIX MONTHS later, I get a humble call, "are you still interested". Nope! Found and bought two more since then, thanks anyway. One of my finds cost $5700... but then again, everything in it works, and no rust.

Thanks for all of the comments.

Alfa, The valvetrain sound that you were hearing may have been the airfilter rattling. When I pushed down on the air filter the sound went away. That is if we are talking about the same sound. I offered him $900 on the 18th and he said no of course. I think that he'll go for $1500. I'm tempted but I just dont know this motor like I know the 617.

What is the typical longevity of this motor?

I did notice some smoke under the hood. It seemed like it was either coming from the turbo or possibly oil leaking onto the exhaust. If the problem is the turbo, are they interchangeable with the turbo from a 617?

I think I heard something other than that but this was a while ago.

One mroe thing, and again, this was a while ago so my memory may be fuzzy - ask him if he's ever overheated the car, I think I got an answer I wasn't fully satisfied with, like once but he got it fixed or something. You don't want to overheat these.

What kind of mileage can I expect out of this motor. Is it towards the end of its life or does it has similiar longevity to the 617 motor?

Smoke.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I think it is common for the intermediate pipe between the two sections of exhaust manifold to leak. At least mine is leaking there!
