Where to buy Floor Insulation???

Well, I fixed the puddle problem in my 300D but now I am searching for some new carpet. I found GAHH to be a good place to buy the carpet, but they said that their kit does not include the insulation that is on the bottom of the original carpet.

1. Is this a big deal, is the insulation all that crucial?

2. Does anyone know where to get this stuff? I have called MBClassic Center and they don't even sell the carpets anymore.

3. Are there any DIY ways to get insulation under the new velour?

Thanks,

Dan

This is the kind of stuf I'm working on getting installed.

You can buy different weights in order to cut into the different elevations in the floor (around the cables/vac lines, etc)

You want the polyester-based pad as it is less prone to moisture issues (fungus, bacteria).

If you look hard enough in the salvage yards, ebay or on this site you can find one of the "sound absorbers". They just stick to the back of the carpets and are pretty easy to peel off. You just need to be sure to specify the correct side.

I had a water Problem in one of my Diesel TDI's years ago and just used carpet pad from a local carpet shop (2 to 3 layers of it) instead of trying to find the factory sound absorbers. It was actually quieter than before. I put that stuff everywhere. In the rocker panels, the a, b and c pillars and in the trunk. It really made a difference.

The Foam backing that is formed to fit the contour of the floor and glued to the Carpet, is no longer available from the dealer. I called our local dealer in Monterey,Ca., and was informed it is NLA, and if it was, $400.00. And that was per side is assume. That was a few yrs ago.

Start checking out the PNP`s lifting the front carpets to see the condition. most and cracked and deteriorated, but I have found a few in good condition. what ever the color is, I buy them, usually around $2.50.

If the carpet is in good condition, I use our Bissell Little Green uhpolstrey cleaner and they clean up pretty good.
I guess that spray on dye might work ok, then the top carpet would cover it any way.

As far as peeling the carpet from the foam, take your time, they don`t just seperate w/o tearing out pieces of foam.

Since junkyard cars tend to be wet (and you'll never get the mildew stink out out of the foam), check the parts section of this forum for someone parting a car like yours. The foam pieces under the carpet is not a big-demand item; you should be able to get what you need inexpensively. The carpet itself will be a little more work since you will want to match the color but again you should be able to find it used. Worst case, you can have carpet made to fit.
