Rear End Roar

I have used this thread for invaluable information, but am unable to find a thread that addresses the roar that I experience under load/pressing the pedal. I have replaced the driveline boot and bearing. That got rid of the grinding sound. The flex coupler looked to be in good condition, so it was not replaced. Any ideas on what would cause the recognizable roar from the rear end? It becomes high pitched at high speed and almost disappears. 20-40 mph almost drowns out the radio. Thanks...

Are you able to isolate the source at all, even a bit? Could be anything from the Diff to wheel bearings to the CV axles. Try to see if it is in the center of the car or if it is by the wheels.

I assume wheel bearings would be constant, not just under load. It is hard to isolate, but definitely coming from the rear end. Last time I heard a similar noise was on a Ford Explorer with a differential problem. It is not constant and occurs only when pedal is pressed. Thanks...

If the sound peaks at certain speeds and if the thing "howls". Your rear end is shot. I'm going through the same thing. I just got a line on a replacement. If it does not clunk too bad check the simpler things first.

The noise is a result of the gears not meshing properly. The clunk can be other more serious things as is the case with mine.

Here are some pics of how bad it can get:

-have no "clunks"...just the roar/whine...knowing the recent owner as I do, I'm sure it never crossed his mind to check the rear end for anything...I will have a good mechanic drive and diagnose...thanks...my fears are being confirmed...
