We have a TDI. It gets great fuel mileage. It also beats you up when driving over bumps. You don't really notice it while driving, because the car handles so darn well. But as a passenger, it's really bad when compared to the Benz.

I had a '98 Jetta that served me very well.

I put 26K miles on it in a year and sold it for $100 more than I paid for it.

I bought it with 237K and sold it with 263K.

I've got a 2001 Jetta TDI and a 1982 240D.

Both have about 200k miles.

Lot's of VW Jetta's in my area. Very few old MB's.

When driving across the country on vacation I take the TDI. When going for a sunday drive in the summer, I take the 240D.

When at the fuel pump with the TDI, people sometimes say, "Hey! You're putting diesel in your car!"

When at the fuel pump with the 240D, people say, "What IS that...?".

They both have a wealth of information on IDIs, both turbo and normally aspirated as well as TDIs. There are also forums for bio-fuels, parts and cars buy/sell, performance mods, etc.

I just sold my '91 1.6 NA. Bought it with 275k on, ran it up to 315k. Always got 43+mpg, and had just replaced the exhaust w/ a 2 1/2" system, Koni's, H&Rs. Sold it for quite a bit more than purchase price, though I put a ton of work into it.

It financed my '95 E300D, and I couldn't be happier..
Between that and the '79 240 4-speed, I have all I'm liable to need

I had/have considered VW tdi's. I've always love VW's(I have a '64 beetle resto project). I learned two things about tdi's...don't buy an automatic and expect to pay through he nose to get the timing belt changed if you pay someone to do it. From what I have read, changing the timing belt on a tdi is a real choir(maybe sounds harder than it is?).

You and I have very similar setups. My wife drives the '05 TDI Variant while I drive the '84 300TD...

I want a TDI.. my commute to school is quite long and the super high mpgs one can get would be nice

I own several VW diesel cars, two 86 Golf diesels and the 97 Jetta TDI. TDIclub is pretty much the gathering place although there's a decent discussion about diesel and TDI's on vwvortex.com in the technical section.

The timing belt change is expensive if you have someone else do it and it's particularly difficult on the A4 chassis cars (99.5+). The earlier A3 (97-99) cars are relatively easy and comparable to the earlier VW idi diesel cars / trucks. Same goes for the B4 (Passat) TDI cars from 96-97...pretty easy. I can say that the mpg for my TDI is excellent even if the car rides a little rough, then again I have 15" wheels and keep my tire pressure up there for easy rolling. I got 53mpg on a trip to Chicago and back this past summer pushing 70mph+ and I easily get 47mpg in the older diesel Golf running back and forth to work in town. The W140 is comfortable but not even close.

2001 Jetta TDI
160,000 Miles

Had to replace timing belt right after I bought it, and paid $825 to have someone do it in my driveway. Parts were about $350 so it was $400 labor and $75 travel. He was done in about two hours, but its booked as six hours. Worth it to me, though I usually try to do the light/medium mechanicals myself. I didn't have any experience, manuals, familiarity with the TDI at that point, just knew that there was 95K on the belt and it needed to be done.

Love the mileage and handling, but I can't wait to get my 300SD back on the road.

TDI Club is, in my opinion, similar to this group, though seems to be a more performance / mod oriented as well as repairs and problems rather than a restore / repair site like this. Plus the forum software is the same.

The TDI was my first diesel after my decision to make biodiesel.
It is now my wifes DD. We both love its economy and performance.
It is our long distance traveller.
The Cummins was next , nuff said.
The 2 Benz's were next and I smile every time I get behind the wheel of one .
TDIclub has saved my mechanical butt many times, just like Peachparts does for the MB's
