'99 E300 Fuel shut off valve replacement

I finally graduated from the 123 series - we bought a 99 E300 and absolutely love it - wow ... what a difference 16 years can make !
I noticed a leak in the fuel shut off valve and my mechanic here in nor cal wants about $350 to replace it - has anyone done this job - it seems fairly accessible - what about the "o" rings - how many are in there ? I must say looking under her skirt scares me a bit - my old '83 wagon seemed so simple -
-- thanks 4 the help ... ( :

It's unlikely that the valve itself is leaking but more likely the plastic fuel lines which have o-rings on the ends which push into the valve body or the o-ring on the back of the valve which goes into the IP. If you remove the washer bottle you can access the SOV, remove all of the plastic fuel lines from it, replace them or just the o-rings on the end, remove the SOV and replace its o-ring and see if that stops the leaks, I would bet it will.

I'll 2nd what Marty stated. I'd spray everything clean using brake cleaner, and take it for a 30 minute drive and check again where the leak(s) were coming from. I'd rather replace a $2 oring on the SOV, or at a fuel line, than the $200 SOV for no reason.

The SOV doesnt come with a new oring; it is ordered separately.

Do the test drive after cleaning with brake cleaner. It might also be the IP O rings leaking onto the SOV. If you do the O rings in the IP, make sure you replace the Copper crush washers as well. That will get rid of any "at speed" nailing you might encounter, at least it did for me. BTW I replaced the SOV last year, and this year it was the IP O rings. If the SOV is leaking you might find it doensnt shut down right when you turn off the key, it seemed to stay running for a couple of more revolutions.
