A 1968 200D would make a great car if you can fix any problems it has. I would still be driving mine, but it was too rusty, the engine smoked and leaked oil badly, and the interior leaked (the cost for new weatherstripping is about $2,000). I have over $4,200 into the car and it would have needed at least $5,000 more to address the problems, not including the rust repair! So now the car is being dismantled for spare parts for my wagon and to supplement my income after I lose my job in October.

I bought most of my parts from The Mercedes-Benz Classic Center. You can get the part numbers from the Electronic Parts Catalog that Mercedes-Benz offers for free, then email Phil on this site to see if he can get them (AllPartsExpress and Fastlane do not show parts for the W110/W111 chassis, but can usually get them). Then there are also other online retailers which I cannot mention.

I found it was very easy to get parts for my 200D and I am very, very sad I did not have the resources to save it. Heck, no one wanted it even at the $1,200 that I originally paid for it. It was extremely reliable, comfortable even after sitting in it during 15 hour trips, great on fuel, and gave decent acceleration. I would definitely own another if I could get one that didn't need so much money poured into it and didn't have my 300SD and 230 wagon to worry about. Besides, as far as I am concerned, 1968 was the best year for the fintails.

A top speed of 55 MPH could be due to clogged fuel filters (check the tank screen, too), or perhaps not enough linkage throw at the pump. Mine would get up to 60 MPH pretty quickly and before I knew it was cruising at 80 MPH in the fast lane passing the rest of the traffic.

Sorry to hear about your job. I've been laid off twice (once on December 23) and had at least one 'assured' long-term contract vanish into government paper hell, so I know what it's like.

The 200D is no longer in my possession. I stripped it of almost all useful parts and sold it to someone who wanted the drivetrain and will scrap the body. I was very sad to see it go, but it was too rusty to fix on top of needing a fortune in new weatherstripping and having a major oil leak.

Overall, I made more money parting it out than I would have if I had sold it, I got to keep the parts I wanted, and the only thing going to waste is the rusty shell--so I don't feel too badly about things. If it wasn't for the rust I would probably have driven it for the rest of my life. I'm looking forward to some day restoring my Universal.

No, the buyer wanted it as part of the deal. It had all new shift bushings and boots. He is a fintail fan and wanted the engine to rebuild. The transmission, new clutch parts, axle, etc., are all going to be spare parts for him.

Oh, and that yellow wheel chock was gotten from a dumpster at McChord AFB that was full of of them.

$150 plus a windshield and electrical switches. I was happy with the deal. I didn't think a floor shift would be valuable. It seems every other fintail has it. Besides, the floor shift won't do any good without the transmission itself since floor and column shift transmissions are different (floor shift has levers on top of casing, floor shift has them on the side).

Well,the thing is, the same parts fit all those early mercedes 4 speeds and the floor change box wasn't that common.
