What parts should you replace at 300K?
Of my three MB's the lowest mileage one is at 205K, the high one will hit 350K tomorrow. What I want to know is what should I consider replacing on my high mileage cars as PM? I mean over and above all the standard fluids, bushings, mounts etc. Any set time to replace the timing chain? How about the oil pump chain? Steering box? Anything in there to replace as PM? Anything I can replace in my trans. to help it make the next 300K? What about the diff? Any bearing/bushings I can replace there to avoid parking beside the road? Let me know what you guys think.

It really depends on your plans for the cars. I would take a look at the timing chain stretch and condition as well as the oil pump chain condition. I would probably check the compression before spending a lot of time/money on the engine. Consider replacing the oil hoses, water pump, vacuum pump, and radiator unless you are confident of their conditions. I don't know what you can do with the tranny beyond frequent fluid/filter changes. If you dig into the front/rear suspension, you will probably find issues, consider replacing everything at once if you are going to dive in.
Honestly, I've replaced just about every moving part in the car to get to 500k with everything working properly. How long do you plan on driving it, and how much are you willing to spend? |

I'd like to drive them till a repair pops up that is just not economically prudent to repair. Major motor/trans problems come to mind. As long as I can do it a bit at a time. Oil pump chain this month, rear main seal next etc. Just want to stave off the inevitable as long as possible. The compression check is a good idea.

If your not planning on doing the tranny at some point, don't spend much money on a 300k mile car.

I've replaced most moving parts (except the engine itself, P/S pump, and Diff) to make it to 285k!
I did my timing chain at 212k because it had 11 degrees of stretch. In the 70k+ I've put on it since, it has not even stretched a single degree yet....likely due to my anal 4k synthetic oil change intervals.... This year was a big year for my SD, probably because the year prior had been a minimal year (just an alternator and brake pads for the most part...) This year included: Transmission, all brake pads/rotors, rear brake calipers, Rebooting CV Axles, valve adjustment, brake and fuel lines from front to rear of the car.......the list goes on. However, I can proudly say I did ALL of the work myself.

What's the average life on a transmission that has had its regular maintenance (fluid and filter)?

My 87, the one with 350K, is on the original transmission. I bought the car with 292K on it and did the trans service then, and again at @330K. I guess I shouldn't expect much more? It still behaves well.

I don't know the average life, mine only lasted 250k but I doubt it was well maintained. My current tranny is doing great at 250k (highway). I would start keeping an eye on it after 300k or so.
