617 interchange 85 to 83

I've got a 83 300sd that needs a motor and a motor out of a 85 300d.
the injection pump and turbo don't look quite the same.

what all will i have to change over to make this work?

thanks in advance,
jason

IP and turbo don't matter, '85 added on a bunch of extra sensors (IP and temp sensors), and the turbo probably has an ARV that could be worked around (probably just disconnect).

You will need to switch over the motor mount arms and the oil filter housing.

Swap the turbo and IP.

The box on the back of the pump is a rack position sensor.
leave 85 pump on and disregard the cable from the box.

turbo will work fine also w/o a vacuum line going to it. just cap the pipe fitting.

The engines are the same except for the bolt on items.

The 83 300D won`t have any place to plug in the Rack position Sensor cable. this was for 84 and 85. I believe it sends a signal to the EGR computer moduel behind the passenger foot well kick panel which you don`t have. also the signal from the tack sensor cable that mounts to the transmission adapter plate sends a signal there also. complicated set up.

The ARV valve on the turbo, just disconnect it. I was saying to plug the nipple the vac hose connects to at the valve. keep dirt and water out of it. might not matter.

since you have an 83, your golden. don`t have some of those complicated problems.

thanks charmalu for this post....I too have a Franken-Benz a 82 300SD with a 1985 motor...I was wondering if the lack of vac on the ARV was why she feels a bit doggy...but at least now I can rule that out! !~!

The 85 Cali engine has the turbo, intake/exhaust manifolds that sit higher to compensate for the Trap-oxidizer which is mounted under them for the Cali emissions . the federal manifolds and Turbo can be swapped over.

One thing about the 85 engine, (Cali engine) it does not have the drain tube in the upper pan, for the oil to drain from the oil seperator in the air filter.

I reread my old post, you do not have to replace the injection pump, leaving the Rack position cable unplugged will not hurt anything. only sends a signal to the black box that controls the EGR for the 84 & 85 models.

These pumps have a plug on the side that a special tool screws into for the timing, and gets it spot on.

Bottom left picture in the link.

If you are energetic, you can change everything on the engine while you have the 2 engines out. If I were doing the swap (I did in fact do this on my '82 300CD), I would just use the long block from the '85 in your '83. You have to use the '83 SD oil filter stand (as stated above), but everything else is up to you. Like I said, I would use the following parts from the '83, and install them on the '85 motor: oil filter stand, intake & exhaust manifolds, upper oil pan, tach sensor and bracket ('85 uses flywheel sensor on adapter plate), adapter plate, injection pump (not really necessary, but I changed mine as I wanted it to look stock). I would change the rear main seal while you have everything apart (much easier to do it now while the engine is out!). I changed the entire rope seal without removing the crank or head (I did a how-to here in the DD forum).
Most folks would not care about the manifolds or the RPS on the IP, but I wanted mine to look stock and original. I also did NOT want to use the canister type air cleaner (Cali emissions), so I needed to change out the upper pan so I could have an air cleaner drain tube in the pan.
