Old airbags - Anyone had one deploy?
Just out of curiosity, has anyone here had an airbag from one of the 80's models deploy? (from an accident)
Just wondering if #1, they worked, and #2 how these old first gen. airbags compare to newer models in terms of 'force' when they go off. |
DOT spec airbags from 1997 and before deploy with considerably more force then 1998 and later systems.
I've always wanted to get an early airbag system out of an 86 or so 'benz (they were the first in the US i think?), hook it up in the driveway, attach the computer to a long board, and swing it over my head and hit it on the pavement to see what happens... -Jason |

And FWIW I won't be killing the airbags in my cars... I sit closer to the wheel because I have short legs, and don't want to break my nose on the steering wheel. -J |

I wouldn't be worried if your air bag goes off in an accident. Remember if you sit correctly the air bag will be a heck of a lot softer then your steering column. |
Frying pan full of grease.
I've never actually been hit in the face with a frying pan full of grease, but the airbag did go off in my cousin's '87 Mustang while I was sitting in the passenger seat. It had pass. side airbags. It felt like I had been hit in the face with a frying pan full of grease.
I've never actually been hit in the face with a frying pan full of grease, but.... Jay. |
Hmm I'm happy with my no air bag 85 thank you very much.
Knowing that any car I hit on the road is probably going to need an air bag more then me I'm comfortable knowing it. I'd be happy with ABS however. |
