190D 2.2 EGR Mods
Got a 1984 190D 2.2... Non turbo, California spec.
I found some mentions of an EGR mod that helps performance/economy etc... Does it work on my car?

Not too much on the performance side.
But it WILL help keep the intake MUCH cleaner, and intake air will be a good bit cooler.

Make a plate out of some thin metal and place it b/w the valve and tube leading to intake.
soda cans are perfect. You can also screw down the adjusting screw on top if yours has one ,but its not as effective if there are leaks. Remove the vacuum lines and block them off to eliminate them as vacuum leak sources. |

I think I have an adjusting screw ontop.
Will post a pic later...

I removed my egr early on. The only change I noticed was that the car smoked more upon start up after egr removal. Its true that the egr to intake port was very filled with sooty sludge, but in the end I didnt notice any great change in either performance or mileage. 2.2 naturally aspirated engines are not fast cars.
I would say that removing and cleaning your intake manifold once in a while (say every 100,000 miles, will more than compensate for the bad effects of the egr. And change your air filter often. Beer cans burn out right away and create a noisy exhaust leak. You need something thicker to handle the heat. I used the stainless clamp from the egr flexd tube and a piece of 1/8" steel cut into a circle. |

AFAIK, there is no EGR system on the 84 2.2's. This came later on the 60x. I have a VERY early one (motor number ...00354). There were changes made very early, but after mine, as i recall it was at motor number ...01736. The changes had to do with cooling/oil openings in the block and head. I don't believe that any 84's have any EGR equipment.

I think mine has an EGR.
There is the valve shown above and a metal pipe that runs around the back of the block to the air flter housing.. and a kinda flap valve...

Note taken from Mercedes Workshop Manual
"A. General Starting model year 1984, engine 601.92 is provided with a pneumatically/electronically controlled EGR system for California. Engines in Federal version vehicles are not provided with EGR."
