Driveshaft Question

Planning on swapping in my 4 speed into my SD here in a week or so. Still need to figure out a driveshaft though.

Anybody know how long an SEL or SDL driveshaft is? Idea being if it is too long, it would be cheaper to shorten and rebalanced that than to have a new one made.

I thought about adding a piece of DOM tubing myself and having my buddy weld it. He is a certified pipefitter and is pretty nasty with a welding torch. Then I'd take it to a shop and see if they could balance it.

Option 1 would be better I feel.

Also, anyone know any good driveshaft shops in the Cleveland area? I've got one, but another might be better.

Wonder if there's anything special about SD driveshafts. The gasser W126 ones are often too big to work (different flanges), but iirc the SD uses the same flanges as the W123. Basically just snag a 240d front shaft. Otherwise I think you'd have a hard time finding a small engine on a W126.

I wonder if the front half of the 24o shaft would be longer than the front half of the SD shaft. Thats what I'd like to do. Find either a shaft the fits right off the bat and just swap the front halves or find a longer one and have it shortened. Either way would be cheaper and easier than getting one lengthened with all new tube.

have you looked into getting parts from germany. I know they made a manual 126 in germany. either the drive shaft or a german market transmission might be options to consider.

I've got about 4 or 5 different driveshafts. Shoot me a PM if you need one --- look at my signature for parts cars. Also, go look in the Parts forum.

Please let me know if I can be of assistance.
