opinions on possible lift pump problem

about a month ago, after about an hour of highway driving the car started to lose power, about a mile later it died. i carry new filters with me, so i changed them out - but with tons the hand pumping and cranking it would never fill the primary filter. had my buddy bring me some fuel line and got it to start with lines running to a jug in the engine compartment, drove it back to his farm, i figured the tank screen was clogged. It was not. I blew the lines out with compressed air. re-did all the plumbing and clamps action at the tank and in the engine compartment, drove another hour home no issues. 2 weeks later similar deal only it didnt die, was highway driving and it felt like clogged filters no power situation for a minute or so, then it recovered on its own and i got to where i was going. I checked all my lines and clamps. made a trip or 2 since then that was about an hour each way - no issues. Today coming back from parents house thanksgiving dinner - after about an hour of highway driving - started losing power, it was dark, 12 week old daughter was screaming, i was like no f@!k'ing way is happening now. but it recovered after i let off the throttle a little bit and we made it home. So now im like what is going on here. FIlters, lines, and fuel line style clamps are all new, and have been rechecked at least twice, im fairly certain there are no leaks coming from them. tanks screen is clear and lines were blown out. Anyone have confirmed lift pump issues ? what were your symptoms like. also when i say earlier that it recovers, i mean it goes back to completely normal operation - full acceleration / power. ideas/help/opinions would be greatly appreciated. this is the 85 wagon

That sounds a lot like a fuel tank venting issue.

the time it totally died, one of the first things i did was remove the fuel cap to listen for whoosing - no whoosing, but i guess i should check the vent

Agreed.

The lift pump doesn't fail and suddenly recover after sitting for a few minutes.

I would want to know the fuel feed pressure into the base of the injection pump. Sure rekit the lift pump and call it preventative maintenance if not the fault. Ten dollar or so kit.

Maybe needs Valve Adjustment.

Odd

Not sure if this is a dead lift pump symptom or not.

I have problems with fuel starvation at low idle. I can see the primary filter running out of fuel. If I baby the accelerator.. and I get up around 1500 to 2000 RPM.. there's plenty of fuel and power..

as it idles longer, it starves for fuel.

Is that an air leak, or a lift pump gone bad. Lift pump is pricey.. i was thinking of adding a 12V pump to take the place of lift pump.

well as i looked at this elaborate elbow, blowing and sucking through it, and thought maybe there is supposed to be some sort of restriction device in there or something, then blew 150psi of compressed air through it anyway, it cleared the restriction alright, but then i looked in the manual, and see that there is supposed to be a pressure/vacuum valve in there. well maybe mine was stuck somehow after 23 years, causing fuel starvation as fuel level dropped on long highway trips. heres hoping.

there is a rebuild kit for the lift pump. i would only go for lift pump after you have looked at everything else twice, lines , clamps, filters, tank screen.

TD's are more susceptible to lift pump problems because the fuel tank is so much lower than sedans. I'd try rebuilding or replacing it. I'll also try a fuel flow test when it is showing symptoms.
