New Wagon Owner

I just wanted to drop in and say hello and thanks to the forum. I've been lurking since this June when I picked up an '85 300TD. So far I have learned a lot about rust and water leaks, but most of that is under control and she's running great. For thanksgiving I put her to the test and we made it from Massachusetts to Maryland with no problems. I love this ride!! I'll have pics soon... I promise!

Louis

Hey, congrats on the new ride!

I've made that journey numerous times (Amherst to Gaithersburg, and back) in a 240D. Don't you just love I95

Pictures are great, everyone loves those

Welcome to the wagon club! You'll find loads of great info to keep your MB running like a top and not cost you an arm and a leg. Watch out- MB diesels are addictive.

Thanks to all who replied. The wagon, hound dog and I made the rid home without a hiccup, aside from the dogs dislike of car rides in general. Nate, I’m in Belchertown so if you are ever back in the area drop me a line. I usually avoid the I95 route and cruse the 80's (91 to 84 to 81) down to my folks place in Bethesda. It’s a bit longer but no tolls and no big city obstacles. I have done the overnight shift down 95 a few times just to keep things interesting!
I've got to say that I'm hooked on my Benz for sure!!! The wagon just loved the long highway haul.

All the best,

Louis

This wagon is now mine.

Louis4052 never mentioned that this wagon is a pretty interesting metal fleck purplish burgundy color, sourced apparently from hyundai paint codes or some such. I've bought it as a surprise 30th birthday present for the fiance, so in the coming weeks will be playing with it replacing this and that.

Ill post some pics next week, but in an effort to combine some threads, given the mileage on this wagon now at 320+k, I hope to install a timing chain and oil pump chain, maybe do a Rollguy brand sanden upgrade if funds permit since the AC is out over the next year, and generally tinker with it to get it up to speed.

There are some rust issues, but nothing huge at the moment, and I think the most noticable issues I can quickly eliminate. Should be a fun project, Louis4052 has pretty much the same reaction to rust I have, so the car has some excellent patches on it, as well as some other rusty areas pending.

There are a few interior bits I will be needing to work on, but its a good solid car, but not a car that I or the fiance would feel uncomfortable driving all winter given the existing crispy bits, so I feel like this will be a good solid year round driver.

Im also a new wagon owner, so this should be fun. The only wagon I ever owned was a non running hulk, but I did really like it before I lost storage space for it.

Nice! I've always wanted a wagon, but they never seem to want me... a sedan just feels so wasteful. Sounds like a good car! What color is the interior?

Ha! That's the opposite of how my 'SD was -- blue with tan fronts!

better late than never!

I still owe this thread a pic! So here is one from a camping / rambling / rock and roll hall of fame visiting trip my wife and I did in this wagon back in 2010. Close to 1500 miles round trip and not a problem. We even left the wagon unlocked, by accident, outside the botanical gardens in Cleveland and nothing was taken!

I'm sure JB3 is going to enjoy this wagon, I kinda miss it already....

Looks nice, strait and shiny. Also, it's not squatting and I don't see anything holding up the back hatch. Points!

ok, have the wagon back at my place! I now have vacuuming and cleaning to do before unveiling.

Birthday is next tuesday, so I have one week to beautify, clean, and get it rolling.

The unveiling plan is this-
She wanted some slippers for her B-day. I will be presenting her with some slippers wrapped, with an ignition key inside one of them.

The paint is generally good-

Im removing some of the stickers on the back to try my hand at buffing it-

with the help of daw_two, I have some palamino skins coming for these seats, hopefully I can get those recovered before unveiling, but if not, no big deal.

Mechanically the biggest thing I can see for right now is getting the brakes freed up and working properly. The wagon has been sitting for a bit and things kinda rusted up a little. When I test drove it, some pine needles caught fire that had gotten jammed in the brake area, so that was a little alarming.

The wagon has been sitting in a pine forest for a year, so pine needles are everywhere, under everything, big pine needle removal time.

Looking forward to this! hopefully she likes it.
