300SD Injection pump @ PNP - ?

I was at a PNP this afternoon - my idea of shopping on "Black Friday".....

They have just gotten a 300SD - its NOT the W126 chassis.....its maybe a 79 or 80 model - is that the W116? Body and interior is rough, but engine appears to be in tact......is the injection pump or injectors worth pulling?? If so, is the pump difficult to pull off? I've never done it......

The pump is pretty bad to get off. You first remove the oil filter housing then the rear support bolt and bracket then if the pump is not too close to the block remove the three nuts holding it on. A pull to the rear removes the pump. The injector lines are removed first also.

As for the injectors??? It is up to you, you can have them rebuilt and use them but I would not put them in an engine without pop testing them at least. The injector lines can come in handy some times when you have one that has been over tightened and will not stop leaking or you could cut them up for timing tubes.

Good luck
Robert

I just took one out of an SD two days ago, pre-black friday. It took me about 30 minutes. First get the lines off. Second, take off the inline, outline and oil line. Then, remove vacuum modular. Then, remove throttle linkage. Then, the three nuts at the front come off. After that the fun starts. You must remove the two bolts holding the rear bracket on. Finally, the bolt holding the pump to the bracket must come off. These three bolts take 90% of the time. Be patient. It is possible to get the top bolt on the bottom bracket with a socket. The bottom bolt and the bolt to the back of the pump need a ratcheting wrench.

The tools needed are:
13mm wrench (ratcheting is best)
17mm wrench
12mm wrench
19mm wrench
13mm deep well socket
ratchet
1 1/16" deep well socket (if you want the injectors)

I've R&R the injection pump on a 617 so many times in the last few months, I feel I could do it blindfolded. I never put on the bottom bracket though.

Injector pumps rarely (if ever) go bad. I wouldn't remove the Injection Pump just to have a spare. You will have it on your shelf for the next 10 years. Now, if you need an engine, take the whole thing.

Yes, the 1979 300SD is a w116 model

Pre EGR manifolds

Also if 78 or 79, grab the intake/exhaust manifolds. they are pre EGR. nothing to block off. RARE, not many of them left.

I didn't see it mentioned that you will have to remove the vacuum pump to loosen the IP from the timing device before it slides out.

I may be wrong, but there is no fastener holding the IP to the timing gear on the 617. On all of the aluminum head engines (4,5,&6 cyl) the vacuum pump needs to be removed to remove the bolt holding the IP to the timing gear (unless a previous mechanic left it out).

thank you, good call.

I have a very rare disease in which all the MB related synapses of my brain coalesce in a sort of 'diesel porridge' once I have reached my memory capacity. It appears that time has come.
