Blown Outside air temperature Screen

I've noticed on my 1987 300TD the outside air temperature screen appears to be broken, On similar type cars the screen is a grey color when not on. my screen is black, the back-light works and it lights up green but nothing is displayed, Could my screen have Ruptured? Has anyone had to replace the screen?

If the LCD appears black and shows no numbers then it is dead. This is a common failure. You will have to replace it. Used ones show up from time to time on the forum, eBay, etc., or you might find one in a junkyard. Note that some are Fahrenheit and some are Celsius but the sensor and wiring is the same. Some displays have 4 pins and some have 5 but the wiring can be adapted easily.

Is the Screen part of the Gauge Cluster and pulled as such or does it Reside a little lower and can be serviced through the lower dash panel area?

You have to pull the cluster and remove two screws to then pull the temperature display out of the back of the cluster. I suppose if you have very small hands you could do it without pulling the cluster all the way out but access and visibility would make the job difficult and there would be a risk of pulling some other wire loose through operating blind.
