I followed fruitcake's post and used a feeler gauge to measure the gap and order the correct spacers. They only come in increments of 0.1 mm, so you don't have to measure too precisely.

I wonder if that is a common thing that a garage might do. When MBeige and I swapped out his differential, his axles which were installed previously by an Indy had no spacers and had a lot of in and out play. Not sure how long he'd ran it like that, but the axles seals were all leaking. Luckily I have an assorted collection of spacers and got the correct thickness in there with no play on the replacement diff.

Rounding the inner side of the spacer--

Hey DDP. The rounding of the spacer ring only helps so much. On mine, it was a very small amount, but just enough for me to finally get that side in. (Or at least that is what I'm letting myself think.)

Regardless, I hope it helps your situation.

Since I had to get my car back on the road today, I will find out if my small amount of play causes any immediate problems.

Or maybe I should just say "I don't see any play.." "Do you see any play?" "I don't see any..." and then I will be good according to the FSM

I was wondering myself just how common it might be to not use spacers with a new installation since the spacers need to be matched to the replacement axles. The mechanic told me he had the axle replacement instructions online. I wonder if it even mentions the spacers. When I got the old axles back the spacers were still stuck to the axles giving me the impression that they were not noticed.
I suppose the proper installation requires one to install the axles twice. First without the spacers to take a measurement with the feeler gauge, then remove axles and reinstall with the correct spacers.

I don't think you have to completely "install" the axles twice. On mine, I inserted the axles into the differential and then measured the "gap" with a feeler gauge. Then you just pull it back out and slip on the spacer ring and finish the installation.

I do imagine the spacers are left out quite frequently.

Thanks for the correction. Maybe inserting any needed spacers won't be too labor intensive. I'll have to review the installation threads when I get a chance to get an idea how much more complicated things are now that everything is back together.

Here's a picture of the factory axle and aftermarket axle.

The area shown is machined wrong on the aftermarkets. The spacer will not seat properly even if it is the correct thickness due to the radius here.

Also, the clip groove was so large on the aftermarket axles I'd be afraid it would fall out.

I returned them for a full refund.

Well, I got my axles back in. One side needed the ID of the shim rounded a little bit to fit flat on the axle and than 0.1mm shaved off to get the keeper to fit in the grove. The shim was 1mm thick. The other side not so easy. Again it needed to be rounded to fit onto the axle flat and than had to be shaved down from 1mm to 0.65mm thickness. I used a micrometer all around the shim to get things even. Got 'em in, put everything back together, put oil in the diff, and when to start the car, and nothing. Solenoid on the starter when out. Can't even test drive to see if I broke something else.
