617 Fuel Injectors

I recently acquired a set of Bosch 617 turbo injectors (may or may not be original) from a '84 300SD. I intended to rebuild them (with Monark nozles) and install them in my '82 300D. Although both sets look the same externally, the '84 version has a much longer spring and other internal differences. I am sure either will work, but I am wondering if one version is better than the other.

It is not just that the spring that is longer. You cannot swap any of the Parts from one Injector Type to another.

However, as long as the Opening/Pop Pressure is correct you can use any combination of the assembled types of Injectors you want in your Engine.

Take a closer look at the external appearance:

There are no material differences externally.

I am curious to know if the more recent version is an improvement over the earlier model. Usually, engineering changes are made for good reason. It would not be hard to imagine a longer spring providing more consistent performance, for example.

Now that the cat is out, the left injector is a 2-stage design from a Canadian VW Golf with the 1.9L AAZ engine. The two injectors you pictured (which was my picture) are totally different inside and do not have interchangeable parts.

That is funny as I thought I was a pic of two Injectors I got out of my Garage.
