I have family out in rural NE Colorado. They have been talking about the price creeping up. I think it was over $10 for a while. That is just nuts....
Last time I was out there it was less than $3.

I filled up a 5 gallon jug about 2 months ago for something like $2.90/gallon (diesel was around $2.50/gal at the time). Has it really gone up that much or are we talking about a more refined version?

Damn. Spring before last Home Depot had gallon tins of Kerosene on clearance for $.50 each... I bought all I could carry at the time (about 30 gallons). Wish I had gone back with a truck! I use it in the garage in my torpedo heater.

Why not dig a trench, and lay yourself a Natural Gas line to the garage, and use a natural gas heating system?
I use a propane heater or Electric. I run both for about 20 minutes to get the garage warm, then I can use all Electric heat to keep it comfortable once I turn off the propane heater. Why is it so extremely expensive where you are? I can get heating kerosene at the local speedway (not even 2.5 miles away) for $3.28 a gallon.

sounds like a severe gouge, even for ultra clean kerosine. You could buy synthetic fuel for less than that.

when I used to have a woodshop, we had a 55 gal drum setup with a spigot and would have the delivery guys come fill it up for our torpedo heaters. It was always cheaper than the gas stations and we didn't have to worry about transport.

A friend of mine has a kerosene heater for his garage that also runs on diesel. He almost always runs it on diesel because it's much cheaper. He just runs down to the Fred Meyer by his house and fills up 5 gal cans.

A year ago this past summer, I found a car in the junkyard that had diesel in it.....they had punctured the tank (from the trunk) up sort of high. I walked out with almost 5 gallons of diesel in a vegetable oil cubie.
