Yeah, the S4/S6 is another machine that's more than its on-paper stats would indicate- it seems to have a near-Benz solidity with just a hint of Porsche flavor to it. They can be made stupid-fast without a huge effort, but I'm enjoying mine near-stock. Most of these get either RS2 turbos, 250,000 miles, or severe rust, but mine has none of the above- she has 104,000 miles, had 76k when I purchased in 11/07, and the Benz helps keep the odo reading low.

Back in '05-08, I was doing it backwards. I had a pretty silver 300SD and a loud, ratty, fast, lowered Audi 5000TQ. I wore the Benz out (it needed a transmission, paint, and maybe a valve job, ALL AT ONCE)- but the Audi was in good shape when I sold it.

The new plan with the S4/300TD combo:

Audi is hangar queen, goes to Euro car meets, Saturday night dinner/movies etc., fast drives in the mountains. Stays beautiful and low mileage.

Benz is mechanically sound, cosmetically frayed workhorse that carries firewood, estate sale treasures, car parts, and me to work, ever serenely through the traffic. And the mileage doesn't matter because the VDO odometer thoughtfully quit counting years ago!

This kind of split might work for you in maximizing Benz/BMW enjoyment also, as they are definitely different in spirit...
Trade you a nice E36 M3 for your S4?

Passion never goes away

Becuase of my work I rent a fair number of cars -- mostly GM. Not the worse cars in the world but after having spent almost 500000 miles in a Benz-- all I can say the passion for these cars has not dimished.

When I drive my E320 CDI I can be in it for hours -- get out and feel refreshed. My back doesn't hurt. Also when I drive the benz I feel safe. I feel as if I'm wrapped in the car -- not just floating around.

I have had passion for the Benz since 1979 -- when I got to close the door on an SL-- i was hooked.

My passion hasn't faded in any way --

I know it's a crime to dig up the recently deceased, but I needed to say no. I've been wondering if shouldv'e gone with some old American car with a big 'ole V8 or, even better, straight 8. Driving the 240 today, got out and just got a big whiff of the petro-diesel exhaust-- all regret gone. I've had the car for about a year and a half.

I keep finding my way back to MB. I know that I will change my car in 2-3 years, because I really want a 4x4 back in my life to crawl around on the beaches here. I looked at all the 4x4's on earth, but I feel too inclined to go with the benz g-wagon. I wish benz made more 4x4's to choose from, like pickups. Imagine a benz pickup?

I am really looking for a g-wagon diesel, they still cost a fortune, and hard to find. I would love to have the space to swap this engine from my 300td into a gasser g-wagon, but can't. but i figure i would baby it and keep it for the long haul. Sigh....just waiting for wifey to finish her maternity leave....

Some of my past experience with select enthusiast cars are:
Pontiac GTOs (the real ones)
Porsche 944 Turbo and 928S
Pontiac Trans Am GTA
Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX
Honda Civics (2nd-gen old-school wagons)
E36's including a M3
Audi 90 and A4 (B6)

But all in all, MBs and AMGs will always stay near & dear to me...

So I'm not the only one...

Amen brother --- it's so cool to know that I'm not the only one that enjoys an occasional blast of smoke and soot in the face of a tailgater or just someone who looks like they deserve it!

I was behind a brand new (temporary paper tag) E class CDI the other day -- he took off fairly strong from a light, and that thing blew basically nothing.....WELL - that's not ok! I managed to work my way around him, and then it was my turn at a light ---- I hit the 617, the turbo was hitting full spool and black smoke was rolling! A moment to cherish and someday share with my grandchildren...

PS....Also love to do it when my kids are following - They call it the "James Bond" smoke screen.

Actually sad what turns us on as we get older...

Ahhh. I have a '68 GTO Ram Air II convertible and still have my old '94 Dodge Stealth (really Mitsubishi 3000GT). Plan to own a Porsche 912 soon. Trans Am? Blech...I have a '67 Firebird 400 HO being converted back from a drag car.

Nobody can figure out why I love Umlaut so much. I can't explain it. I just appreciate quality, in the sense of Robert Persig's definition of "quality".

Ha! I am really temped to do that to bicyclers that hog the middle of the lane and not letting a stream of cars pass. Seems like that happens a lot where I drive. Never have done it though...but I should!

Well, as a bicyclist, I feel I should stick up for my comrades. Before you let your smokescreen go, look at the side of the road. If there's ****ty road or sand or ice or something, don't force 'em in there. If they're just in the middle of the road, or not riding single file, be a huge dick. I know I do. They deserve it.

I started off with W123's, and W126's. Then I decided the newer Benzes could only be better, right? WRONG! I bought a W140, and it was far too thirsty and complicated and expensive to repair. Then I bought a W202. It catastrophically failed after 5k miles.

Guess what I'm driving now? A 240D! LOL.

Sweet! I had a '70 hardtop goat at first for a year then for 12 yrs, a '70 GTO Conv w/ 4-spd manual. It was replaced with a WT block from a '68 goat by previous owner. He mentioned the orig block had cracked... anyway it had some goodies since he installed a complete NOS Ram-Air kit back then, complete from cable to pans to scoops, etc... even a factory hood tach & f/r Judge spoilers. Too bad I sold it, but it was to fund higher-education which of course I took the best advantage of...

I'm still a Poncho fan... even the older models, from Catalina 2+2's to the '61 Ventura coupes!

as time goes by, i have found that i listen to the radio less and less in my '82 300d (96k original miles, original paint w/ no body work), b/c i'd rather listen to the engine! people at work think i'm nuts, but i couldn't care less. having been to hell and back with a cold-weather no-start (fixed), oil leaks (fixed), no cruise (fixed), and a finicky heater (still troubleshooting), i wouldn't trade "Marvin" for the world! "arriving refreshed" is a good way another poster put it. when i had my jetta tdi, i drove the piss out of it and always felt in a hurry, but not with old marv.

Ive been driving old Mercedes since I got my license (only 3 years) but I will never turn my back on Mercedes Benz. I wrecked my first car and could have easily died or suffered crippling injuries if I was in anything other than a mercedes but I walked away.

Aside from that whenever I get near any other make of car, even newer mercedes, I just think their crap. I drove my dads GS300 for 3 months and hated every mile of it. My brothers 93 lexus is a camry pile of crap. My dads gf's lancer is a toy deathbox that I refuse to ride in on the grounds that it is to unsafe. I dont think my passion for them will ever fade because its all Ive known. When I think car I think old Mercedes. I enjoy well crafted, well engineered, logical, efficient, reliable, classy and safe cars and that leaves me with ONE option, a mercedes. And no, a Volvo doesn't count. Their safe, reliable and well engineered but lack what a mercedes offers

I drove my SD for the first time in 3 weeks tonight (had to get my insurance reinstated due to lack of money last month) and mashing the throttle on the onramp and having the diesel engine push my big car past 60, then 70, then 80 was just a damn good feeling I dont think any other car can provide. I plan to buy several more mercedes to insure that I will be able to drive them for the rest of my life. If parts break 30 years from now Ill make new parts or have someone make them.

hobbers, im starting to get in the habit of turning off the radio when i get on the freeway so I can listen to the car work!

As a cyclist I also agree. I try my best to stay on the shoulder as much as possible but sometimes its very difficult. If the shoulder is dirty and there is traffic it can take an insane amount of concentration. I do however hate cyclist that think they can ride in the road. I do wish people would pass more carefully though even when I am on the shoulder.

I HATE it when Im descending a steep grade and actually exceeding a speed limit and some ass in a celica or dodge truck tries to pass me becuase Im riding in the road (shoulders are way to dangerous when riding a 16 pound bike at 50mph). Drivers need to learn to relax and be patient so they don't KILL someone
