First, glad the young man is ok. Cars and parts can be replaced, not so loved ones.
If car is damaged beyond a reasonable amount to repair, I say sell it for parts, or keep it for parts. Buy another good 300 SD, they are out there and honestly, I'd rather buy one for right price than fix one !!!
Have been very fortunate with my kids and cars.:
First, they all worked and bought their first car. Paid the insurance . I worked on them , for free of course !!
Secondly, and this is just my .02 worth: I firmly believe that if you work for something, and pay for it, a person tends to take better care of that item, be it a bike,car,boat,whatever.

So it does shift, but it needs to be at a really high RPM?

If so, it sound like a stuck kick-down solenoid, or stuck kick-down switch.

Try pressing down hard enough on the accelerator to engage the kick-down switch a bunch of times. It may unstick the solenoid. If that does not work, try unplugging the connector at the kick-down switch.
