It looks like the refrigerant condenser and radiator are trashed. The radiator mount is trashed too. Along with the hood and left quarter panel.
The right motor mount is OK but the left one looks like it was pushed back about 1/2 inch. I'll be able to get a better look once the fron panels are removed. Does anyone have an idea if this is repairable? Danny

I think you need to find a 300SD that has been hit bad in the back. Hopefully the same color.
Is your son still alive? Or haven't you caught up with him yet? LOL

May not be as bad as it looks once you get into it. Looks like a lot of
sheet metal damage until you start digging into it. For sure you will need a hood, fender, bumper, grill, radiator, AC condensor, fan and clutch. Looks like eng oil, so maybe the Oil Cooler and/or hoses. The radiator support may be pulled back in shape, or a new one is available from the dealer. then there is PNP. Make sure the water pump is ok, and the pump housing that it didn`t get tweeked. I have an eng out of an 84 300D with 97K. It had about the same front end damage as yours. pushed into the eng about the same amount. The WP pulley rubs on the ballancer, so i think the pump housing maybe got tweeked some. I have a spare to change, so we will see. If one eng mount got pushed back, better check the trans mount and other eng mount for damage. Too bad you aren`t closer, I have a front 126 bumper. Charlie

I was looking in the manual and it didn't have a section on removing the quarter panels. How hard are they to replace?

Should be something like:
Remove the bolts along the top edge. Unbolt the front bumper. Unbolt the light. Remove the plastic panel covering the bottom of the fender (there should be a bolt or a screw). down there. unbolt the plastic cover from the inside (the one that keeps mud from the tire out of the inner fender area). Lastly, feel around inside that space for a bolt hiding near the door hinges. Older mercedes have one. I'm sure these do too. Once all the bolts are gone, the fender might need a little wiggling, but it should basically lift off the car. -CTH |

Were we all not "young" drivers at one time...?
A bad deal...but the positive is that your son was ok, and no other vehicle or friends were involved.
I have to laugh a little when reading some of the posts on this thread - especially in reference to, and the offering of advice as to how to "help" our young ones learn --- It just reminds me of when I was young, and all my friends were young and "enjoying" our early years of driving and not always following the wise counsel of our parents. While I realize the "help" being offered is primarily in jest... But how about some experiences from OUR past, and how appreciative we are that our parents didn't chase us with a golf club.... Much of the time, the accident and damage to "dads" beloved car is the only needed "help" in understanding and learning.... At least it was for me - wow!

Having issues with the new car
'88 300SEL No tranny fluid...How much damage???
I got a call from my daughter yesterday that the car, a 1988 300SEL, wasn't shifting properly. So I tell her to check the transmission fluid level and it turns out there was almost no fluid in the tranny. She goes and buys 4 quarts and puts them all in. Fluid level is just a little above marks now. She tries to drive it and it still won't shift properly. She says it revv's really high, up around 5K, and won't shift. And when it does the whole car surges forward. She said she was doing around 45mph at 5K revs and it wouldn't shift. What could be causing this problem? Could the tranny be damaged? Is the pump trashed or could it just be the modulator? Or maybe the fluid just needs to flow through for a little while? I'm just grasping here. she really needs the car for work and school and I don't know how to fix the shifting issue. Also, probably not related but when I drove it it ran fine except for a shimmy from up front at high speed. You could hardly feel it below 45 or 50 mph. I thought it was from the tires since they are old and need to be replaced. or maybe a warped rotor? I haven't had a chance to look at this, she was going to bring the car over this weekend for tires and some DIY maintenance. Danny

Sounds like it may be a combination of symptoms. If it's over-filled, the transmission will do the over-revving and have trouble shifting. Also, if it has been run really low, it needs to be driven a while to get the fluid recirculated. Drive it easy and do an occasional manual shift through the gates.
I went through this same thing, not long ago, when the secondary pump seal decided to go. Also, I had to return to the minimum level mark on the dipstick and add about 100mL at a time to maintain level until shifting returned to normal.

Too bad you're so far away, I've got a complete front end, including radiator and condenser, I won't be using those on mine.
Anybody heading to FL anytime soon? |
