Question How hot would you run a 617?

Guys,

I am trying to get as much heat as I can out of my 617 block for wintertime with my 2 tank WVO system (Frybrid) in the 85.

I put in an 87C thermostat that runs the car at around 95C measured with an IR thermometer at hottest part of the block. The car's temp gauge reads around 100C, for what thats worth.

Is this too hot? It never rises about the 95C measured with the IR gun, no matter how hard I run it in the current weather (60's today). It's nice for the WVO, it runs the WVO at 180-190F constantly at the IP inlet. With the stock the 80 C thermostat Im in the 170's.

The radiator is new in the last few k miles, btw.

Thanks,
dd

Thats fine, you'll probably get a few more MPG out of it too.

Have you run it really hard up hills? In traffic? Until you can be completely sure its not going to overheat I wouldn't push it too hard.

He's taking a roll of the dice on his engine's lifespan with the WVO anyway, so who cares about a little heat.

we are all rolling the dice driving 20+ year old cars, most with multiple POs spotty service records, years of low cetane low grade US diesel use, 200+k miles, so why not save some money and run some wvo. My dice are lucky as I have over 40k running tw-tank wvo system on this car and had 25k on an 84' 300tdt before selling it for 6k three years back.

Dan,

I think that, during the winter, this is fine. Keep in mind that higher heat does = higher wear.. but on this small increment of change, its only the oil taking a hit.

If you want to seriously consider this a permanent install, get an oil analysis after the spring and summer months.

It was just a joke... I could give a whooey

I think the rule is as long as it never gets over 110, you're good.

I run a hotter thermostat in the winter and a cooler one in the summer. A bit of a hassle switching every 6 months but not too bad. I think the real test is come summer time on a hot day in traffic w/AC cranked etc.

Hey Paul,

Where did you get your hotter t-stat and what is it rated at?

I will definitely switchback to the 80C stat in the warmer months. This is all in preparation for the cold.

I block my grill/radiator in the winter months with cardboard when it gets below about 20F. It runs a bit hotter because of that. It was 10F this morning...time to block the radiator!

Make sure your coolant mix is good with not too much water in it. I wouldn't want to go too much over 100C. As long as your gauge is accurate and you watch it closely, I wouldn't worry about running at 95C in the winter months.

The T stat I run in the summer is rated @ 75c-mainly due to it running a bit hot after trying several fixes. I am reluctant to do the citrus flush based on your and others bad experience. The T-stat I run in the winter is the std, I think 85C? I need to change it out this weekend. I do remember it was alittle difficult to find the cooler one.

what is the factory thermostat in degrees celcius to open at?

as far as heat goes and adding it i would think it would shorten trans life.

The factory thermostat is supposed to open at 80C. Like all manufactured items, there is some tolerance in that number. You can easily test the thermostat by forcing it open and jamming a string in it. Then suspend the thermostat in a pan of water and heat it on the stove while watching a thermometer in the water. The temperature at which the thermostat drops off the string is the actual start-of-open temp for that thermostat.

100C will not hurt the car; up to 110 will be OK for iron-head engines such as the 61x family but I'd be cautious over 100C. Iron heads can crack too.
