Fire Piston, Anybody heard of this?
I only bring this to the forum because it has been claimed that Rudolf Diesel saw this device and from it developed the diesel engine.
It is a fire-starting device from Asia that uses compression to ignite fuel that can be used as a coal to start a fire. www.firepiston.com This is a trip.

Yes, before the Internet was around I read about it in several Survival Books and I believe my Diesel Instructor also mentioned it.
Pacific Islanders used it and it was in use when Euro explorers arrived. If you do a google image search you can buy the modren versions. I did not look long enough to see if there was any pics of the origional ones.

I only found out about them while trying to get together some camping/survival gear.
They tend to be very expensive to buy compared to the half dozen magnesium fire starters I just bought at Harbor Freight for $1.99 each. However, I might get one just so it matches my car.

I did some research on this a few years ago; my favorite story is about some flying explorers who landed in a remote spot, maybe New Guinea. As curious natives gathered around, one native rolled a cigarette, popped a light with the fire piston hanging around his neck, and proceeded to smoke. "Hey, that's cool, let me see that," said the pilot. "Here's how I do it." Demonstrated his Zippo. "Hey, that's cool," said the native. So they traded.
But while the pilot ended up with a lighter that would work the rest of his life, by the time the native showed his Zippo to all his friends, it would be out of fuel or spark, and totally useless. So who had the better lighter? Steve

Talked to a friend who runs our outdoor education program. He had one but said it was never really functional. I'm thinking of getting one just on general principle.

I have seen video on YouTube of a PLEXIGLASS fire piston that worked like a charm. If it's functional, you should immediately pull out the plunger/piston so the lack of oxygen won't extinguish the coal.
