Fixin' to fix IP seals. What about the throttle?

I am about ready to take on the delivery valve seals on my '95 E300D. Rented the goofy socket (Thanks, Paul. I promise to return it some day). Got copper washers and new o-rings at the dealer. Loaded up on Viton o-rings and some Viton line for other plumbing issues I may encounter. Finished hanging Christmas lights with the neighbors.

During a break in the rain and drizzle this weekend I raised the hood to start to plan my assault. I know I need to take the cross over pipe off, and I think I see all the fasteners for it. Next, the intake manifold comes off, and I think I see the bolts for that.

Here's my question: The throttle cable comes across the top of the engine, and is connected to a valve over by the start of the cross over pipe. Do I have to disconnect any of the throttle linkages, or will the cross over and intake come off around the cables, brackets, toggles, sliders and springs?

Thanks for the help!
Tom

Slow progress

The weather was clear today, so I got out under the hood of my '95 E300D (W124 606.910). I'm having trouble getting the crossover pipe off, so this will have to be completed another day. Also, I found it hard to reach all connectors on the washer fluid reservoir. I think there are a couple of things I need to be ready for when I come back at this:
  1. Have cups or bottles on hand to catch coolant from the lines to the washer bottle
  2. Have plugs for the coolant lines
  3. Have towels under the car to catch coolant, or just pour a pile of cat litter before starting.
  4. Maybe have some of the plastic washer fluid line on hand in case I damage the old ones when trying to pull them loose
  5. Figure out what size Torx wrench fits the intake manifold bolts (my biggest is a T30, and it is too small)
On the plus side, I did figure out how to pop the throttle linkage loose from the little ball joints.

Rather than completely give up, I decided to change the fuel filter. I had a towel over the belt, and paper towels at hand. Plenty of fuel comes out when loosening things. I had read a tip about using a turkey baster to siphon some off. Even doing that, I found that there was a small, steady jet of diesel the whole time I had the spin-on filter out of place. Speed is a necessity.

One of my impediments was figuring out where the new O-rings went on the bolt. I saw one in a deep recess above the hole, but the smaller one was nowhere to be found. I'm a bit stumped on that one. It looked like it might fit on the section of the bolt where the hole is, so that is what I went with. If anyone has a picture that can clear this up for me, I would appreciate it.

The car starts, and I don't see fuel jetting or seeping around the filter, so I am feeling good so far.

If anyone has hints about getting the cross pipe off, please share.

Thanks,
Tom

Well, I'm getting seepage now. We have had some big temperature swings lately, and the tank is very low. I'm wondering if I am "benefiting" from pressure changes in the system.

I had problems with the o-rings on the filter bolt, so I expect I am having fun from that. We will see if tightening the bolt a touch more helps or hurts.
