Febi Hydro Oil
I have an 87 300TDT, Anyone ever used or know if it can be used some other hydro oil for the suspension other than MB stuff? What about Amsoil hydro oil? There must be alternatives to the Febi stuff somewhere.

There are indeed threads on this in the archives somewhere. I asked a few years ago, and someone posted a list of acceptable fluids to use. As I recall there is a variety of Shell Aero Hydro fluid that will work. It cross-references to a a Mil-Spec oil that my Guard unit happened to have an "expired" surplus of, so I had a nice stock of the stuff in the garage just in case. I gave it to the buyer of my Euro 300D, though... otherwise I'd send a few cans along.
Anyway, search the forums... it's bound to turn up some relevant threads. EDIT: here's the thread I was thinking of; apparently the link I provide in it is dead, but the MilSpec version of Shell Aero 4 is what I wound up using, and it performed well. Someone, somewhere, had posted a list of 4 (or so) fluids, other than Febi, that were approved for use in the MB SLS system, and Aero 4 was among them. As I recall it was a MB technical .pdf of some sort, so I felt comfortable using the alternative fluids. I guess in the end, the safest bet is to just stick with the Febi stuff, as expensive as it might be. People run all sorts of oils in them without problems including generic "tractor hydraulic fluid" but the consensus is that it's probably best to use what the manufacturer recommends.
Before you complain too much about the cost I can tell you that Rolls Royce also specifies that their cars use a special mineral based hydraulic oil in their systems and that stuff costs $25 a liter, which is at least double what the febi stuff costs. Jaguar also uses special stuff which costs $20 a liter. It's just the cost of owning some "special" cars :D |
