How does the outer door handle/grip attach on a w123??

The passenger door handle/grip on my 1985 300CD is pulling away from the door as pictured in the photo:

This diagram from the manual shows a barb that should be holding it against the door.

I'll be taking the door apart tomorrow to try and fix this. Is that barb something that could come loose and spin around or is it likely broken off?

Will I be able to fix this or will I need to find a replacement door handle?

I'm thinking it is broken.

That's what I'm thinking too, but I can't find a picture of one ANYWHERE to see what I'll find.

It looks like I could maybe drill a hole through the post where the barb appears to be attached and possibly make my own "barb" and attach it with rivets or a bolt.

I guess I'll know when I take the door apart tomorrow.

If anyone has a picture of what it looks like I'd like to see it.

EDIT: I may be posting a thread in the parts forum tomorrow.

Are w123 and w126 door handles the same? Chad, I've got a few of each. Some with keys and some without.

Chad... replied in your other post. That barb is hard plastic, IIRC. If it's broken, worn, or simply stays loose all the time then just get any good door handle set from another 123, even from the opposite side (just flip over). Swap the entire key tumbler too. Mine was replaced earlier this year and so far so good!

They really are not hard to get out. Some screws from the edge of the door and then it lifts out IIRC.

Slide forward (or maybe its to the rear) after you take the screws out and then it lifts out. If it has the key assembly, you have to disconnect that before lifting it out.

  1. ROLL DOWN the window.
  2. Then, undo the screw(s) on the back "end" of the door.
  3. Take a rubber mallet and bump the handle toward the front.
  4. Then insert key and turn in the unlock position.
  5. Then pull out. The read end of the handle comes out first....then it slides backwards to let the front "little catch" come loose. Then the front portion of the handle comes out.
My memory is failing so this may NOT be 100% accurate, but I know step #1 is useful.

I have a complete set of matching front door handles/trunk/glove box/ignition tumbler with about six keys (some new, some old, one valet) I was going to fleabay. Ignition tumbler is not new, but only used about three years. Out of an 84 300D. PM me if interested.

Thanks for all the insight guys. I got it fixed this morning.

The screw in the photo was loose and just needed to be tightened. It appears that there's a plate that gets clamped against the inside of the door sheet metal with that screw. There's a hole in the door that appears to give access to that screw but the window was just slightly in the way even with it up all the way.

I ended up using a mini ratcheting screwdriver to tighten the screw.

A day late and a buck short. I was going to tell you that the screw you tightened needed to be tightened. I've had this happen before. It's a quite fix.

I love this forum!!

Finally tackled this problem after months of it getting looser and looser. There was no screw to be found, so I replaced it with a 16mm bolt.. seems to do the job..

Thanks
