A little water in the trunk

It's been raining. Yesterday I'd been shopping and opened the 240's trunk to put some stuff in it. I noticed on the right side a dribble of water down the side of the trunk into the well. There was no puddle. It's possible I guess that water ran off the trunk top when I raised it and ran in there and I didn't see it, but it seems odd that that's the only place it happened. Noticed it again when I got home after wiping it up at the store. The trunk seal is soft and is either a replacement or in really good original shape. I guess I can wait till it's dry, then spray the back of the car all over with the hose, dry off the trunk lid and open it and see what I can find. Are there any drains or other openings I can check? I'm wondering about the fuel filler cap. Is it gasketed or does it have a drain? Having no rust, I want to keep it that way. Thanks!

Most likely culprit is the boot around the fuel filler neck.

I was having a dribble run down in the exact same spot and since my drain holes in the wells were plugged I had a puddle back there. I cleaned it out and now the drain is fine, but I had to reseal the window.

Eventually I want to replace the trim since it is kinda hard. I bought the MB OE window sealant and now I have no leak!

Check to see if you can lift the seal on the window. I betcha there's a lot of pooled water hiding under there.

How do I check that? Inside the filler door or from underneath?

I got a small leak from the bolt hole that holds the trim under the taillight!

I'd bet rear window gasket. Lots of times the window seals shrink over time, and look okay, but there is only a thin line of rubber that is sealing over the body. Go around you the body side of the rubber and lift it up and see how much over lap you have and see if there are any tears or cracks.

To check the fuel filler neck seal. Just open the fuel door and look at the seal.

Thanks for the info. I'll check the window seal and the filler door seal. I doubt seriously it's the tail light gaskets as the water is in the forward part of the trunk, very close to where the tank filler is located, running down the right side of the forward section of the plastic liner on the side, almost as if it had dripped off the trunk lid when I opened it.

Yea... That is what a lot of people think. Including me. I could have sworn that my rear windscreen was leaking. But, it was not.

The water runs around the pinch welds and alll the flat surfaces, then finds its way to the front of the trunk. It is a common problem. Another common problem is a hairline crack in the tail light. Then the water follows the same route as the "gasket leak".
