Tow hook on gas tank?
Poor girl wont start and just got a "new" starter delivered today. Driveway is icy and it's going to be cold this week. Few of us tried to push her up the driveway (has a slight grade to it) into the garage. Wasn't going to happen with all the ice.
Car is in the middle of the driveway at the bottom. I was going to hook the titan to her and pull her up. There is a hook on the gas tank, but it seems kind of weak and not sure if its a tow hook or not. What is a good spot to tie a rope to on the back of an 81 300D? I knew she was heavy, just not this heavy  Thanks for any input and your time.

That's not the gas tank; it's the spare-tire well. Go ahead and use it.

your fuel tank is behind the back seat. That tow point is a lot stronger than you realize.

Both hooks are incredibly strong. I have towed my old autocrossing benz with the straps hooked just to those loops hours and miles on end. Just looking at them you would not think they are very strong.

They may work fine for towing, but I always thought they were "tie down hooks" for securing the new car during shipping (maybe on the assembly line also).

A friend had his CD pulled up 50 feet out of a BIG ditch by there, no problem.

Back in the early 1970's these hooks started showing up on German cars. All of them had them in one way or another. At that time dealers called them 'towing eyes'.
I was told it was German law that every car have one in front and one in the back. Porsche even had to drill a hole in the back bumper of the 914 so you could screw in the towing eye since there was no good place to weld one on. The eye itself was kept in the 914 tool bag until it was needed and a 'button' was plugged into the bumper hole to cover it up. I have towed Mercedes for hundreds of miles using these eyes, and they are the best way to tie one down during transport.
