Not fair to say that it would start sitting at -35C overnight, haven't tried, my interior temp gauge was only read something like -25C mid-day when I was starting it. But yup, starts up on one crank one compression stroke, after one glow of maybe 20 seconds. Kinda grumpy, but it keeps going... Not too much smoke of any kind. I run various brands, Shell, Castrol, ... always dino 15w40 tho. I have the Mercedes battery in it, I think it's three years old.

O/night I park in an unheated attached garage, that is maybe 20 degrees warmer than outside by virtue of attachment to house. But often it's reading -20C in there and she fires right up.

I've only plugged it in once, ever, just as an experiment the other day to see if it starts easier (less grumpy)... and yes plugging it in helps but it's not necessary to get it going.

The car is in good tune, all new glow plugs, and all new Monark nozzles, and new timing chain all within last 6 or so months. Running winter diesel around here. Vrrrm...

No need to start the Benz at the moment, but the TDI has been starting (not real happily) with one glow cycle at zero (f) ambient temps. I really need to get a timer and plug it in if I know I'm going to drive the following day.

I'm still confused. Do you plug in your car or not? What is the coldest you have cold started your car using 15W40?

I've always ran 5W40 and the coldest I've cold started my car was -5F. I've started it much colder (down to -25F) being plugged in.

My 300D started fine this morning in 28F. No block heater either. My dad couldn't get his Sprinter started.

I started and drove mine the other day at -8.5c. So around 16 degrees I believe. It started but wasn't happy about it! LOL!

Today 15F and started no problem, took about 30% longer to start than normal, but heated right up and was chugging along just fine.

No block heater.

No glow plug relay function (new one on order)

I assume that you applied 12V to the glow plugs another way?

I drove to work in -10F this morning but the car was parked and started in the unheated attached garage which is right around freezing temps at the moment.

Perhaps I'm not as technically versed here as I should be. The glow plug relay is non functional, though installed. I am able to start the car without much fanfare without it, even in the colder temps.

Sorry, that's about as cold as it gets around here. I'll edit the temp if it gets colder than that. I live here for a reason. I got tired of the Wisconsin winters.
