84 300D sluggish at 1500 to 2200 RPM

My vehicle has 108k miles on it and the compression is fine. If you accelerate slowly from a stop and allow the car move through gears everything is fine...or if you punch/floor it from a stop, the car also performs very well and shifting/acceleration is smooth. My problem is when I accelerate from a stop in more of what I would consider a normal fashion (medium acceleration). The car starts out fine, then at about 1500 to roughly 2500 RPM the car gets sluggish, clacks a bit, and smoke comes out the exhaust. It then pulls through it and again the performance is wonderful. Help!

sounds like its way to rich to me in the mid range -

injection pump has a timing plate that add fuel to rpm type of thing, and it may be out of sync, have the pump timing checked its the cheapest mechanical repair you can start with - filters always can be an issue because the fuel today is filthy at the pump - jz
