Exhaust hangers
 

Exhaust hangers need to be replaced regularly... :)
Before, NOT when they break. :eek:

i usually just replace mine with metal hangars which i bend into an oval shape then twist tie the ends off. cheaper than going to the dealer or online and buying a new one, and it helps me reaffirm my policy of ghetto fixes. question: are exhaust hangars for diesel cars different than for gas models?

I agree with Roy, its a PITA when they break, normally wet and cold. You end up crawling under the car getting cold & wet. If you see cracks in them when the car is being serviced you know they are going to break the next time you hid a decent bump. I have used hay bale twine wrapped around a few times and tied up for a road side repair. For the sake of a few bucks its not worth the agro to leave them till they break !

The round hangers are now available in both regular and hard rubber. I am currently using the hardies and they don't seem to stretch as much as the regular ones. They also work better than the square hangars. It's always a good idea, though, to carry a couple of tie-wraps for on-road emergencies.

Sorry for digging up an old thread but.....today I was going to buy 2 cycle oil for the weed eater. The nearest most convenient place for me was local auto-parts store that I use frequently. Upon turning into the parking lot of the store I hear a sudden thud and scrapping sound. I get out of the car and the rear of the exhaust is sitting on the ground!

I wished I had checked the hangers sooner but couldn't be more thankful than having this happen at the right place!!

While having my oil cooler lines changed last Friday, I noticed 1 missing and 2 badly cracked hanger donuts. Only around a year old. Luckily, I had some in trunk. Never thought they would go bad that fast.

Wonder if a zip tie in conjunction with the hangers would be beneficial, more as a backup when the hangers do fail?

Zip ties may not withstand the heat I suppose.

I had the two rear-most actually break today. :-(

W126 ones..Buy Mercedes Benz 560SL ones. That is the way to go.
 

For those of you with W126 cars (here would be the 300SD, 300SDL and 350SD/SDL)

a not widely known secret is to replace orginals with hangars from the 560SL because inside of them are good steel Mercedes Benz reinforcements.

The regular Mercedes Benz W126 hangars are unreinforced.

Don't even think of the Auto parts (Autozone, Reibes, Chief, and other) donut replacement muffler hangars, they are no good either.

I learned this the hard way by having replacement hangars fail too soon, over and over.

I found them for the 86 560SL little pricer than the regular ones. $7.69. they have a piece of chain inside. nice to have that back up. maybe we could hook up a sensor like the brake pads have with a light on the dash. when it breaks and makes contact with the chain on comes the light. :rolleyes:

I just replaced a couple of them a few weeks back. I replaced them a year ago when I had the exhaust out when I swapped in the 4-spd.

Will these fit w123 exhaust hangers as well or is strictly limited to w126 chassis.

Jim, how long have yours lasted? Some members have reported cracking after nine months with the reinforced square type mounts.

These will fit any exhaust that uses the donut type exhaust hangers.

One year is pretty bad!
How long should they be expected to last?
Are donut manufacturers cheaping-out on the rubber compound because they know the consumer will be long gone when the donuts fail?
I had a set of donuts break on my first 240D after just three years. Were made in Canada, from CarQuest. Replaced those with some asssorted decent spares I had grabbed at Pick-N-pull. Seems like the OE donuts I find are often better quality or longer-lived than aftermarket.

Got my last set for my latest 240D from the Mercedes dealer nearly two years ago. Car is in Virginia Beach now, so I'll see if they're showing any signs of cracking on my next trip there.

If it turns out that decent donuts are no longer availible, I'm thinking about a metal hose clamp or cable ties inside some fuel-hose as a substitute.

Of all the lousy things I associate with Mercedes its these muffler hangers that take top place!
One enterprising soul posted home made hangers cut off old tire treads with the claim of super longevity. Its a fact these things are really short lived and made of cheap rubber, but I am using the hard rubber donuts over the soft and I do carry a couple of coathangers in case they break like they did when my wife drove over the RR crossing and limped along three blocks until someone waved her over and she called me. there was a long scrape mark in the asphalt all the way down the road.

Those reinforced hangers are p/n 107-492-0044 with chain inside.
The regular soft rubber hangers have p/n 107-492-0082 and the hard rubber rings are 112-492-0282
Beware of aftermarket hangers that are selling for 0.29 each (yes that was quoted online) as this is an item you need to forsake economy and go for quality.
MTC (Mission Trading Co.) is one import brand that is making aftermarket 107-492-0044 and they look OK but I prefer dealer parts for these hangers its just the fact of life there are poor quality parts all over the place
