190D rear muffler delete?

Happy Holidays to all! I was able to ring in the holiday season last night by dragging my rear muffler down the street. Quite a light display!

Anyway, what is odd, is my 190D Turbo is not any louder than it was before. Still not too bad, in a diesel sort of way. This seems odd to me, but my question is, can i just put a piece of pipe from the center muffler out the back, or do I really need a new $314 rear muffler?

Thanks for any advice.

George

george, why would a muffler cost you $314? why buy one from the dealer when you can buy a $40 muffler on eBay and have a muffler shop weld one in for $30-$50?

I have done the rear muff delete on several of my benzes including my 91 300d. There is a slight increase in sound, really just a bit of a growl and a slight increase in power and mileage...maybe a mile per gallon or less.

I liked the way it sounded and the bent pipe to replace the stock was about 40 to 60 dollars.

I did i on my 500sec and put the stock muff back on when it sold.

I just replaced the muffler on my '84 300d. I was thinking about doing the straight pipe thing, but I ended up having a local muffler/radiator shop do the work and it only cost me about $130 for the muffler and the labor. It looks nice all shiny and new. And, they put on different hangars which will probably last longer than the donut kind that have a tendency to wear out.

I looked up 190D rear muffler for a 85 in Fast Lane $113.65

I got a good laugh reading and visualizing dragging the muffler and the spark display.

Hmmm... probably because it fits perfect, mandrel bent, no labor for the shop to weld in, looks proper, etc.

Hell, I even cut off a used one from a parts yard and put it on my SDL for about $25. Granted Diesel W126 stuff is far easier to locate...

Shop around, deals are there and to be had. Hell, the link provided for $113 is a great price even if you have to add shipping for $20.

i could get an OBX or other nice muffler with a cool growl to it--not too obnoxious but more free-flowing than the stock muffler, and have mandrel-bent pipe welded onto the end of the stock piping for under $120

I have a nice 190D turbo rear muffler (muffler only, clean cut at the end, can be welded on to the stock pipe.)

I'd consider selling it as I upgraded.

I'm straight piping this next year from the turbo. the darn thing is such a good muffler I think it will be about right sound level wise.

There shouldn`t be any shipping charge for anything over $100.
