Oil is not black

Evening,

If my memory serves me correct every time I have change oil in my 1984 190d the oil turns black after running her for a short time. I changed my oil pan gasket last weekend and filled her back up with Shell Rotella 15W40 + 1/2 quart of Lucas. I have been running around here just a little because I have an oil leak between the injector pump and where it attaches, but it's enough to turn the oil black - I just check it after a short spin and the oil still looks new. It just seems like it should be black by now.

Happy New Year,

Hugh Sr

I didn't clean out the oil pan, and do you mean drain the oil because of the Lucas?

[For more info on the use of the Timken EP test, reference this article from Machinery Lubrication magazine, written by Mr. Ludwig, Chief Chemist/Tech Director of Schaeffer. From the article: "Any test results that are obtained by the use of this test method have been found not to correlate with results obtained during field service."] http://www.machinerylubrication.com/article_detail.asp?articleid=616

After you use Rotella T 15-40 a few times, the oil does not turn black as other oils. This suggests a clean engine interior. Look in the oil filler opening and you should see a clean valve rocker(s),etc.

Stop running that Lucus junk! I'd drain it all out right away and put in just oil. Lucas hurts/destroys engines! It might even be blocking the soot-suspending abilities of the oil, which is why it may not be turning black. All these engines need is oil, no fake additives.

Is that Lucas additive a Molly Di Sulphide based product?
If it is, best not use it as Molly compounds when burned or exposed to a lot of heat, like up at rings, can decompose to form Molly Oxide, This is commonly known as carborundum. Molly Di Sulphide is also known as synthetic graphite and has been used as an additive to grease (the gray colored molly grease) and as a gear oil additive. It does a great job of reducing friction. Just dont put it in an environment where it can be decomposed or you risk high ware rates.

dieseldiehard, that article talks about gear lubrication, not internal combustion engine lubrication, there is some application but it is more relevant to the diff.
hope I dont open a can of worms with the above, but Molly products are great for diffs & wheel bearings, dont use them in motors or auto trans

If you use a good oil, why even consider an additive?
