Trans Pan leak at Right Front Corner
Today I changed my 300sdl trans fluid. The front end of the new gasket seemed to be 1/8" - 1/4" short to make the corner right corner. I stretched it over the corner and installed the pan. Guess what...as I put in two quarts of trans fluid it started pouring out of the same right front corner. I pulled the pan and tried again. Same thing. So I went with the old gasket (still seemed in good shape). Still a minor leak. Seems that it "rolls over" at the right front corner or some thing when I bolt the pan up.
Should I glue the gasket to the pan first then install? Also not sure how tight to crank down the pan bolts. I was thinking not to tight, basically tighten to hand tight and then another half turn as not to crush the rubber gasket. Should I glue the pan/gasket so it does not move during install? And how tight should i crank the pan bolts? Torque wrench is back at the house back in San Diego Also no debris on the trans mating surface. Pan is flat and clean? Any thoughts would be great! Trying to take a 300 mile trip in the morning. Thanks, Rob |

Installing the pan should press the gasket into place, unless it rolled over the edge of the pan in the process.

Hand tight and another half a turn is way too tight for the pan and likely to bend the tabs and cause even more leaking problems. The recommended torque is only 7Nm/5Ft-lbs, which is very difficult to "feel" by hand. It's more like just enough to create a little tension rather than snug.
I eventually had to replace my pan and gasket due to overtorque from the PO. It was a constant battle of leaking problems.

had the same thing happen a few times just glue it but let it sit overnight before you add the oil so the stuff dries , we only use the -Right Stuff < autozone has it - jz

Fairly certain you should never use sealant on any benz pan. Who made the gasket?

I bet just warming the gasket would be a better solution to the problem than gluing. What a mess that would be with the rubber gasket when/if you ever decide to do the repair correctly.
