240D clutch feel
 

Hey,

I was wondering, can a "sport" type clutch be installed on the 240D? More specifically, I'd like it to engage when the pedal is still very close to the floor, instead of when the pedal is almost fully up.

My pending other car will have a clutch like this and I'd like to have both cars the same or similar so I don't look like an idiot when I drive the other car. :)

PS: Couldn't get the wife on board fast enough to pick up that fixer-upper 240D in my area, so I'm scoping for another one now that she is on board. Want a manual trans with power windows and locks, preferrably no rust. Know of any out there for sale?

Screw the 240, get an SDL! :)

This car has a hydraulic clutch actuation system. The position of the point where the clutch begins to pull is determined by the wear of the clutch components. With a little more stick shift practice this will become no problem at all.

If I were looking for a fifteen or twenty year old used car, whether it is a 240D or a 300SDL, my prime consideration would be condition, not particular accessory equipment or color. That's the considerations you have when buying a new car. If you find a car equipped just like you want it, with the right color AND in good condition, it will take you a long time, or you will be VERY lucky.

I have a soft spot for manual transmission 240D's, so I hope you find one. The availability of good 123's on the market comes and goes, but I have noticed three relatively low mileage, manual 240D's in the Dallas Morning News in the last few weeks. I'm sure you can find them on line.

Just to make the chore of finding what you want seem a little less daunting, all the W123 240D's sold as US cars had the central locking system. For no rust you have to look where rust is not a perpetual threat to cars of any make, like Florida, Texas, California, and Arizona. As for electric windows, well, it was a popular option on the 240D but it was an option, and a car with wind-up windows that has no rust, a manual transmission, reasonable mileage and is in good mechanical condition is something I would not pass up if I were looking. I replaced both clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder and it improved shifting dramatically....

I wouldn't mind the SDL again, but wanted to go the manual trans route this time. The SDL was overall my favorite Benz of all that I've owned. But I feel more at home with the W123 series.

Yeah, I need to hit the papers and online sources some more.

I also heard changing the bushings in the manual trans (not sure which ones, it's in another post in this group) changes the feel of the stick.

I know it's easy to shift, but I just wanted to make it the same as my other car, as it's more difficult to shift when you haven't been driving it for a while....
