Trans issue 1977 300D Auto
 

I finally got all the air out of the fuel system and fix my starting problems. I took the car for around a 50 mile drive and on the way back heard a clunk and sounded like something fell off the car. I pulled over and heard a serious grinding sound coming from the car. Reverse appears to be fine but no forward motion. I'm sitting here reading through the forums now for info on the issue. Fluid level is fine. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all!!

Make sure you haven't lost the grommets on the shift linkage.

Might have blown the B2... no forward motion at all? How about when the car is up on a lift or jackstands, will the wheels spin forward in drive?

Haven't gotten it home yet to put it up on stands. The car will reluctantly creep forward in drive.

Any other things to check before I get it home and go for the B2?

Check the flex discs on either end of the drive shaft as well as the center bearing. You might drain out a little trans fluid and see if you get a bunch of metal shavings, I'd do the same for the differential. I'd also inspect the half shafts.

One quick question...

When the B2 fails will it come loose from the transmission housing? I clearly heard something come off the car right before I started having the issue.

First thing that came to my mind was broken axle, but that's not consistent with reverse still working.

No the B2 is inside the trans and can be accessed by removing the trans pan.

Ah, so anyway about my trans, yeah. Well Flex disks, linkages, shifter bushings and trans fluid are all good. So I'm in the driveway driving back and forth, reverse to drive and my right front wheel seems to stick, like the bearing is stuck or something. What are the symptoms of a bad bearing. What else could make the wheel stick? It actually catches and practically locks up!

Pull the wheel and look at the brake calipers and pads. You may have a seized caliper, or a brake pad the came apart.

Also spin the wheel with it off the ground and listen too it, and give it a wiggle back and forth. You shouldn't get much wiggle in the wheel itself, you make move the whole steering a little so it can me a bit hard to tell.

I took the wheel off and it didn't appear that the caliper was sticking. The pads look fairly new.

Searched for a wheel bearing DIY thread, but couldn't find one. Anybody know of one?

Ha! Get this. All the issues I have eliminated or considered a cause to my problem weren't even close. I finally have some alone time with the car and can really check out the wheel that was sticking and low and behold what do i find? You guessed it. The "thing" i heard fall off the car and tumble under the car was one of my front brake caliper bolts. All of my problems were caused by losing a caliper bolt. One lesson I did learn is that if you are ever in a pinch for a front caliper bolt, your lugs on the w123 are also 12x1.50 th'd.
