The ALDA is in the way!?

I bought my 1980 300sd the other day and I started to realize a possible vacuum leak due to hard shifting and the car not shutting off. I then realized that my motor was missing the vacuum module on the top back of the ip that goes to the transmission.

Luckily my parts motor had the unobtainium part that my motor was missing. Anyway, when I go to install the part it seems as though the ALDA is in the way. I am guessing that it would just need to be turned ccw slightly to allow the installation of the vacuum module.

I would guess that loosening the large nut under the alda would allow me to rotate the alda jusr enough. I just happen to not have the right size wrench to turn the large nut. Before heading to the parts store I am wondering if I am heading in the right direction. Also, does anyone know the size of that nut?

Thanks

I thought the same thing, But if you use and alen bolt, the module kind of slips under the lip of the ALDA and the round allen type bolt will have the room to turn. At least on my 300SD that is what happened.

Interesting. I will have to look at it again. i do have the allen bolts, but I dont think that it is going to slip underneath the ALDA. Let me check again.

I double checked and there is no way that the module will fit in without moving the ALDA ever so slightly. I probably have to move it 1/8". I am using a module from a w123. My car is a w116. Would this be a problem or can I just slightly move the ALDA?

You should be able to carefully move it enough with large channel-locks.

Or just take it off completely. You will be surprised at the low-end power increase.
Search "ALDA" & see what you might be missing.

do you mean that I should loosen the large nut below the alda 1st or just turn the alda with large channel locks directly on the alda?

Loosen the nut first. It's captured on the IP, so it's going to seem like you are tightening it. Hold the ALDA and turn the nut CW.

Hold the bottom nut with a crescent or channel-locks.
Turn the ALDA counter clock wise.

I am guessing the PO had the ALDA off.
If the clocking distance/motion is small enough, I have tweaked the ALDA position counter clock wise with large channel locks directly on the ALDA.

Thank you for the responses. I'll look into taking the alda completely off, but I am going to guess that it wont be my cup of tea. What do you think about taking it off?

Thanks

IMO; it is a bad idea on the OM617, and not very good on the 60x engines.

Enough said. I'll just turn it a little.

If you take the ALDA off, you'll be delivering more fuel. I would assume that you should figure out your exhaust gas temperatures before and after you modify fuel delivery.

It serves a purpose, but, if it doesn't work properly (or is maladjusted), it can cause performance loss. IMO, I'd rather burn just the right amount of fuel, rather than dump excess into the engine.
