Christmas damage

Junior out driving last night on a twisty two lane. Gets flashed by an oncoming driver so slows down, rounds a blind curve at about 30 and due to another oncoming car can't swerve to go around the big rock in the middle of his lane. Says he pushed the rock about 30 feet getting stopped before it finally broke up and he got past it. Buggered oil pan and AC compressor belt adjustment brackets are all I see. No steering or suspension damage that I can tell. Drives fine. Anybody got a set of those brackets you want to off? The frontmost one is nearly torn at the bolt, isn't going to last long. I've emailed Phil for a pan and also to ask about the brackets. Wish I had a PNP around here. There is one fairly close and he's got a 240 but it's federal and has a different AC setup I think. Close call, I guess the kid is lucky, but DOD is not pleased. Aimless driving....

If the sump isn't leaking, why replace it? Its not a big dent. Chances are when you replace it, you could end up with an oil leak at the gasket. What happened to the missing sump bolt at the front?

Answer

The brackets are an easy fix.
* Remove
* Pound them flat again.
* If the upper ear is damaged, take it to a local welding shop.

Have a great day. :D

That bolt was missing when we bought the car a couple of months ago. As there is only a very slight leak, I decided to wait until the first oil change to replace it. I ordered a bunch of them. I have a new gasket and the bolts on hand. That dent isn't leaking, but the pan was a new replacement by the PO and it bugs me that's it's hammered. Good idea on the brackets, but if you look closely at the front one in the bottom of the pic you can see that that end is nearly torn from the bolt hole. My neighbor's a welder, I'll ask him if he can fix it. Thanks!

As soon as I started getting familiar with the underside of this car, it's my first merc, I thought to myself "that oil pan is just waiting to get buggered by a rock or parking berm or almost anything sticking up more than 3 inches off the road surface."

I've been thinking about making a skid plate for my w124.

A rock doing that kind damage to your steel pan would have shattered my aluminum one and done wonders to the oil pump pickup
