"95 E300D--threw a rod? Jumped timing? Broken valve?

Last night on the freeway I heard a sudden clattering/knocking. Engine began losing power quickly (30 seconds or less). Pulled on to shoulder and engine died. Wouldn't turn over--seemed seized. Full of oil, and no loss of oil pressure, no overheating, no leaks. Towed home. This morning, I tried to start it--it will turn over but makes a terrible scraping/shrieking noise with every revolution of the engine. I cut the serpentine belt just to see if it could be an accessory. No difference, still has scraping noise. Will almost start, but not quite. As if some of the cylinders are firing.

Any ideas?

A parts car now?

If I might inquire, what size tires are on your W124 8 hole wheels?

I agree with Scott. Also drain the oil & see what you find in it. The car looks too good to scrap. At worst you may need a second hand motor.

Agree, too good to scrap, a color I rarely see too. Time to find a used engine.

How many miles has the engine covered?

Full service history?
